[व] इत्य एवम उक्त्वा भार्ये ते राजा कौरववंशजः ततश चूडामणिं निष्कम अङ्गदे कुण्डलानि च वासांसि च महार्हाणि सत्रीणाम आभरणानि च ।। १-११०-३६ ।।

sanskrit

'Vaisampayana continued, 'The Kuru king, having said this unto his wives, gave away to Brahmanas the big jewel in his diadem, his necklace of precious gold, his bracelets, his large ear-rings, his valuable robes and all the ornaments of his wives.' ।। 1-110-36 ।।

english translation

[va] itya evama uktvA bhArye te rAjA kauravavaMzajaH tataza cUDAmaNiM niSkama aGgade kuNDalAni ca vAsAMsi ca mahArhANi satrINAma AbharaNAni ca || 1-110-36 ||

hk transliteration

परदाय सर्वं विप्रेभ्यः पाण्डुः पुनर अभाषत गत्वा नागपुरं वाच्यं पाण्डुः परव्रजितॊ वनम ।। १-११०-३७ ।।

sanskrit

'Then summoning his attendants, he commended them, saying, 'Return ye to Hastinapura and proclaim unto all that Pandu with his wives hath gone into the woods, foregoing wealth, desire, happiness, and even sexual appetite.' ।। 1-110-37 ।।

english translation

paradAya sarvaM viprebhyaH pANDuH punara abhASata gatvA nAgapuraM vAcyaM pANDuH paravrajitò vanama || 1-110-37 ||

hk transliteration

अर्थं कामं सुखं चैव रतिं च परमात्मिकाम परतस्थे सर्वम उत्सृज्य सभार्यः कुरुपुंगवः ।। १-११०-३८ ।।

sanskrit

'The mighty chief of the Kurus, having renounced all worldly possessions, including wealth, desire, pleasure, and even the highest spiritual enjoyment, along with his wife, for the sake of another.' ।। 1-110-38 ।।

english translation

arthaM kAmaM sukhaM caiva ratiM ca paramAtmikAma paratasthe sarvama utsRjya sabhAryaH kurupuMgavaH || 1-110-38 ||

ततस तस्यानुयात्राणि ते चैव परिचारकाः शरुत्वा भरत सिंहस्य विविधाः करुणा गिरः भीमम आर्तस्वरं कृत्वा हाहेति परिचुक्रुशुः ।। १-११०-३९ ।।

sanskrit

'Upon hearing everything that had transpired in the woods from his attendants, Dhritarashtra, the foremost among men, wept for his brother. He remained immersed in his sorrow, finding little solace in the comforts of beds, seats, and meals.' ।। 1-110-39 ।।

english translation

tatasa tasyAnuyAtrANi te caiva paricArakAH zarutvA bharata siMhasya vividhAH karuNA giraH bhImama ArtasvaraM kRtvA hAheti paricukruzuH || 1-110-39 ||

hk transliteration

उष्णम अश्रुविमुञ्चन्तस तं विहाय महीपतिम ययुर नागपुरं तूर्णं सर्वम आदाय तद वचः ।। १-११०-४० ।।

sanskrit

'Meanwhile, the Kuru prince Pandu (after sending away his attendants) accompanied by his two wives and eating fruits and roots went to the mountains of Nagasata.' ।। 1-110-40 ।।

english translation

uSNama azruvimuJcantasa taM vihAya mahIpatima yayura nAgapuraM tUrNaM sarvama AdAya tada vacaH || 1-110-40 ||
