शृणु संजय मे सर्वं न मे ऽसूयितुम अर्हसि शरुतवान असि मेधावी बुद्धिमान पराज्ञसंमतः ।। १-१-९६ ।।

sanskrit

'Attend, O Sanjaya, to all I am about to say, and it will not become thee to treat me with contempt. Thou art well-versed in the shastras, intelligent and endowed with wisdom' ।। 1-1-96 ।।

english translation

zRNu saMjaya me sarvaM na me 'sUyituma arhasi zarutavAna asi medhAvI buddhimAna parAjJasaMmataH || 1-1-96 ||

'My inclination was never to war, nor did I delight in the destruction of my race. I made no distinction between my children and the children of Pandu' ।। 1-1-97 ।।

'My sons were prone to wilfulness and despised me because I am old. Blind as I am, because of my miserable plight and through paternal affection, I bore it all. ' ।। 1-1-98 ।।

vRddhaM mAma abhyasUyanti putrA manyuparAyaNAH ahaM tava acakSuH kArpaNyAta putra parItyA sahAmi tata muhyantaM cAnumuhyAmi duryòdhanama acetanama || 1-1-98 ||

'I witnessed the relentless foolishness of Duryodhana, who continued to display thoughtlessness and folly. After observing the opulence of the powerful sons of Pandu, my son faced ridicule for his clumsiness as he ascended the hall. ' ।। 1-1-99 ।।

rAjasUye zariyaM dRSTvA pANDavasya mahaujasaH taca cAvahasanaM parApya sabhAròhaNa darzane || 1-1-99 ||

'Unable to bear it all and unable himself to overcome the sons of Pandu in the field, and though a soldier, unwilling yet to obtain good fortune by his exertion, with the help of the king of Gandhara he concerted an unfair game at dice. ' ।। 1-1-100 ।।

amarSitaH savayaM jetuma azaktaH pANDavAna raNe nirutsAhaza ca saMprAptuM zariyama akSatriyò yathA gAndhArarAjasahitaza chadma dayUtama amantrayata || 1-1-100 ||
