स भॊगान विविधान भुञ्जन रत्नानि विविधानि च कथितॊ धृतराष्ट्रस्य विवर्णॊ हरिणः कृशः ॥ १-१-९१ ॥
'It was represented to Dhritarashtra that his son, while partaking of various objects of enjoyment and diverse precious things, was becoming meagre, wan, and pale, like a dissatisfied deer.'॥ 1-1-91 ॥
english translation
sa bhògAna vividhAna bhuJjana ratnAni vividhAni ca kathitò dhRtarASTrasya vivarNò hariNaH kRzaH ॥ 1-1-91 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअन्वजानाद अतॊ दयूतं धृतराष्ट्रः सुतप्रियः तच छरुत्वा वासुदेवस्य कॊपः समभवन महान ॥ १-१-९२ ॥
'Dhritarashtra, sometime after, out of affection for his son, gave his consent to their playing (with the Pandavas) at dice. And Vasudeva coming to know of this, became exceedingly enraged.'॥ 1-1-92 ॥

anvajAnAda atò dayUtaM dhRtarASTraH sutapriyaH taca charutvA vAsudevasya kòpaH samabhavana mahAna ॥ 1-1-92 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptनातिप्रीति मनाश चासीद विवादांश चान्वमॊदत दयूतादीन अनयान घॊरान परवृद्धांश चाप्य उपैक्षत ॥ १-१-९३ ॥
'And being dissatisfied, he did nothing to prevent the disputes, but overlooked the gaming and sundry other horrid unjustifiable transactions arising therefrom.'॥ 1-1-93 ॥

nAtiprIti manAza cAsIda vivAdAMza cAnvamòdata dayUtAdIna anayAna ghòrAna paravRddhAMza cApya upaikSata ॥ 1-1-93 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptनिरस्य विदुरं दरॊणं भीष्मं शारद्वतं कृपम विग्रहे तुमुले तस्मिन्न अहन कषत्रं परस्परम ॥ १-१-९४ ॥
'Despite Vidura, Bhishma, Drona, and Kripa, the son of Saradwan, he made the Kshatriyas kill each other in the terrific war that ensued.'॥ 1-1-94 ॥

nirasya viduraM daròNaM bhISmaM zAradvataM kRpama vigrahe tumule tasminna ahana kaSatraM parasparama ॥ 1-1-94 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptजयत्सु पाण्डुपुत्रेषु शरुत्वा सुमहद अप्रियम दुर्यॊधन मतं जञात्वा कर्णस्य शकुनेस तथा धृतराष्ट्रश चिरं धयात्वा संजयं वाक्यम अब्रवीत ॥ १-१-९५ ॥
"And Dhritarashtra hearing the ill news of the success of the Pandavas and recollecting the resolutions of Duryodhana, Kama, and Sakuni, pondered for a while and addressed to Sanjaya the following speech:--॥ 1-1-95 ॥

jayatsu pANDuputreSu zarutvA sumahada apriyama duryòdhana mataM jaJAtvA karNasya zakunesa tathA dhRtarASTraza ciraM dhayAtvA saMjayaM vAkyama abravIta ॥ 1-1-95 ॥
