तस्याख्यान वरिष्ठस्य विचित्रपदपर्वणः सूक्ष्मार्थ नयाययुक्तस्य वेदार्थैर भूषितस्य च ॥ १-१-१६॥
'Being the most eminent narrative that exists, diversified both in diction and division, possessing subtle meanings logically combined, and gleaned from the Vedas, is a sacred work.' ॥ 1-1-16 ॥

भारतस्येतिहासस्य पुण्यां गरन्थार्थ संयुताम संस्कारॊपगतां बराह्मीं नानाशास्त्रॊपबृंहिताम ॥ १-१-७॥
'Written in a graceful style, this composition encompasses themes from diverse sources. It is illuminated by the wisdom of other scriptures and captures the essence of the four Vedas. We are eager to delve into this historical narrative, known as Bharata.' ॥ 1-1-17 ॥

जनमेजयस्य यां राज्ञॊ वैशम्पायन उक्तवान यथावत स ऋषिस तुष्ट्या सत्रे दवैपायनाज्ञया ॥ १-१-१८॥
'This sacred work by the remarkable Vyasa, casting away the shadows of dread, was joyfully narrated by the sage Vaisampayana. This narration unfolded under the guidance of Vyasa himself during the serpent ritual of King Janamejaya, dispelling fear with its divine essence.' ॥ 1-1-18 ॥

वेदैश चतुर्भिः समितां वयासस्याद्भुत कर्मणः संहितां शरॊतुम इच्छामॊ धर्म्यां पापभयापहाम ॥ १-१-१९॥
'We express our desire to immerse ourselves in the recounting of the remarkable deeds of Vyasa, a sage of extraordinary accomplishment. With the four Vedas as his sublime offerings, he orchestrated marvelous actions. We intend to embrace this righteous scripture, one that not only embodies virtue but also dispels the looming shadows of wrongdoing.' ॥ 1-1-19 ॥

सूत उवाच । आद्यं पुरुषम ईशानं पुरुहूतं पुरु षटुतम ऋतम एकाक्षरं बरह्म वयक्ताव्यक्तं सनातनम ॥ १-१-२०॥
'Brahma, the perceptible and imperceptible, the eternal essence; simultaneously existing and non-existing, encompassing the universe yet transcending the boundaries of the existing and non-existing cosmos.' ॥ 1-1-20 ॥
