समन्तपञ्चकं नाम पुण्यं दविजनिषेवितम गतवान अस्मि तं देशं युद्धं यत्राभवत पुरा पाण्डवानां कुरूणां च सर्वेषां च महीक्षिताम ॥ १-१-११ ॥

'I journeyed to the country venerated by the Dwijas (twice-born) called Samantapanchaka where the battle was fought between the children of Kuru and Pandu, and all the land chiefs ranged on either side.' ॥ 1-1-11 ॥

english translation

samantapaJcakaM nAma puNyaM davijaniSevitama gatavAna asmi taM dezaM yuddhaM yatrAbhavata purA pANDavAnAM kurUNAM ca sarveSAM ca mahIkSitAma ॥ 1-1-11 ॥

दिदृक्षुर आगतस तस्मात समीपं भवताम इह आयुष्मन्तः सर्व एव बरह्मभूता हि मे मताः ॥ १-१-१२॥

'Thence, anxious to see you, I come into your presence. Ye reverend sages, all of whom are to me as Brahma(divine beings).' ॥ 1-1-12 ॥

didRkSura Agatasa tasmAta samIpaM bhavatAma iha AyuSmantaH sarva eva barahmabhUtA hi me matAH ॥ 1-1-12॥

अस्मिन यज्ञे महाभागाः सूर्यपावक वर्चसः कृताभिषेकाः शुचयः कृतजप्या हुताग्नयः भवन्त आसते सवस्था बरवीमि किम अहं दविजाः ॥ १-१-१३॥

"You are greatly blessed ones who shine in this sacred place with the splendor of the solar fire: you who have completed the silent meditations and have offered oblations to the sacred fire; yet you sit—free from care. What do you desire, O you Dwijas (twice-born)?" ॥ 1-1-13 ॥

asmina yajJe mahAbhAgAH sUryapAvaka varcasaH kRtAbhiSekAH zucayaH kRtajapyA hutAgnayaH bhavanta Asate savasthA baravImi kima ahaM davijAH ॥ 1-1-13॥

पुराणसंश्रिताः पुण्याः कथा वा धर्मसंश्रिताः इतिवृत्तं नरेन्द्राणाम ऋषीणां च महात्मनाम ॥ १-१-१४॥

"Shall I recount the sacred stories collected in the Puranas containing precepts of religious duty and worldly profit or the acts of illustrious saints and sovereigns of mankind?." ॥ 1-1-14 ॥

purANasaMzritAH puNyAH kathA vA dharmasaMzritAH itivRttaM narendrANAma RSINAM ca mahAtmanAma ॥ 1-1-14॥

रसयह उवाच । दवैपायनेन यत परॊक्तं पुराणं परमर्षिणा सुरैर बरह्मर्षिभिश चैव शरुत्वा यद अभिपूजितम ॥ १-१-१५॥

"The Rishi replied, 'The Purana, first promulgated by the great Rishi Dwaipayana, and which after having been heard both by the gods and the Brahmarshis was highly esteemed," ॥ 1-1-15 ॥

rasayaha uvAca । davaipAyanena yata paròktaM purANaM paramarSiNA suraira barahmarSibhiza caiva zarutvA yada abhipUjitama ॥ 1-1-15॥
