सुखासीनं ततस तं तु विश्रान्तम उपलक्ष्य च अथापृच्छद ऋषिस तत्र कश चित परस्तावयन कथाः ॥ १-१-६ ॥
Seeing that he was comfortably seated, and recovered from fatigue, one of the Rishis (the sage) then inquired about someone else, asking if anyone there had stories to share from beyond. ॥ 1-1-6 ॥
english translation
कृत आगम्यते सौते कव चायं विहृतस तवया कालः कमलपत्राक्ष शंसैतत पृच्छतॊ मम ॥ १-१-७ ॥
"When do you arrive, O Sauti, and how has your time been spent, lotus-eyed one? Tell me about it," inquired the sage ॥ 1-1-7 ॥
english translation
सूत उवाच । जनमेजयस्य राजर्षेः सर्पसत्रे महात्मनः समीपे पार्थिवेन्द्रस्य सम्यक पारिक्षितस्य च ॥ १-१-८ ॥
"Sauti said, 'Snake-sacrifice of the high-souled royal sage Janamejaya and in the presence also of that chief of Princes, the son of Parikshit.' ॥ 1-1-8 ॥

कृष्णद्वैपायनप्रोक्ताः सुपुण्या विविधाः कथाः । कथिताश्चापि विधिवद्या वैशंपायनेन वै ॥ १-१-९ ॥
'Having heard the diverse sacred and wonderful stories which were composed in Mahabharata by Krishna Dwaipayana, and which were recited in full by Vaisampayana'. ॥ 1-1-9 ॥

शरुत्वाहं ता विचित्रार्था महाभारत संश्रिताः। बहूनि संपरिक्रम्य तीर्थान्य आयतनानि च ॥ १-१-१० ॥
"Having heard those diverse and wonderful stories from the Mahabharata, I traveled to many pilgrimage sites and sacred places."॥ 1-1-10 ॥
