यॊ वयस्य वेदांश चतुरस तपसा भगवान ऋषिः लॊके वयासत्वम आपेदे कार्ष्ण्यात कृष्णत्वम एव च ॥ १-९९-१४ ॥
'That illustrious Rishi having by his ascetic power divided the Vedas into four parts hath come to be called on earth by the name of Vyasa (the divider or arranger), and for his dark color, Krishna (the dark).' ॥ 1-99-14 ॥
