अथॊतथ्य इति खयात आसीद धीमान ऋषिः पुरा ममता नाम तस्यासीद भार्या परमसंमिता ॥ १-९८-६ ॥
'In this connection, there is another old history that I will recite to you. There was in the olden days a wise Rishi of the name of Utathya. He had a wife of the name Mamata whom he dearly loved.' ॥ 1-98-6 ॥
english translation
उतथ्यस्य यवीयांस तु पुरॊधास तरिदिवौकसाम बृहस्पतिर बृहत तेजा ममतां सॊ ऽनवपद्यत ॥ १-९८-७ ॥
'One day Utathya's younger brother Vrihaspati, the priest of the celestials, endued with great energy, approached Mamata.' ॥ 1-98-7 ॥
english translation
उवाच ममता तं तु देवरं वदतां वरम अन्तर्वत्नी अहं भरात्रा जयेष्ठेनारम्यताम इति ॥ १-९८-८ ॥
'The esteemed lady conveyed to her husband's younger brother, who was foremost in eloquence, that she was already pregnant from her union with his elder brother. Therefore, she urged him not to pursue his desires further.' ॥ 1-98-8 ॥
english translation
अयं च मे महाभाग कुक्षाव एव बृहस्पते औतथ्यॊ वेदम अत्रैव षडङ्गं परत्यधीयत ॥ १-९८-९ ॥
'She continued, "O illustrious Brihaspati, the child that I have conceived has indeed learned within my womb the Vedas along with their six Angas. Your seed cannot be wasted in vain."' ॥ 1-98-9 ॥
english translation
अमॊघरेतास तवं चापि नूनं भवितुम अर्हसि तस्माद एवंगते ऽदय तवम उपारमितुम अर्हसि ॥ १-९८-१० ॥
'How can then this womb of mine afford room for two children at a time? Therefore, it behoveth thee not to seek for the consummation of thy desire at such a time.' ॥ 1-98-10 ॥
