[षम्तनु] आपवॊ नाम कॊ नव एष वसूनां किं च दुष्कृतम यस्याभिशापात ते सर्वे मानुषीं तनुम आगताः ॥ १-९३-१ ॥
'Santanu inquired, "What transgression did the Vasus commit, and who is Apava, by whose curse was the Vasus compelled to take birth as mortals?"' ॥ 1-93-1 ॥
english translation
अनेन च कुमारेण गङ्गा दत्तेन किं कृतम यस्य चैव कृतेनायं मानुषेषु निवत्स्यति ॥ १-९३-२ ॥
'Santanu inquired, "What deed has this child, bestowed by Ganga and named Gangadatta, committed that necessitates his dwelling among humans?"' ॥ 1-93-2 ॥
english translation
ईशानाः सर्वलॊकस्य वसवस ते च वै कृतम मानुषेषूदपद्यन्त तन ममाचक्ष्व जाह्नवि ॥ १-९३-३ ॥
'Santanu implored, "Why were the Vasus, sovereigns of the three worlds, doomed to incarnate as mortals? O Jahnu's daughter, enlighten me with the full tale."' ॥ 1-93-3 ॥
english translation
[व] सैवम उक्ता ततॊ गङ्गा राजानम इदम अब्रवीत भर्तारं जाह्नवी देवी शंतनुं पुरुषर्षभम ॥ १-९३-४ ॥
'Thus addressed, Ganga spoke to the king Santanu, "O best of men, listen to me."' ॥ 1-93-4 ॥
english translation
यं लेभे वरुणः पुत्रं पुरा भरतसत्तम वसिष्ठॊ नाम स मुनिः खयात आपव इत्य उत ॥ १-९३-५ ॥
'Ganga, addressing the king, her spouse, and paragon among men, began, "O foremost among the descendants of Bharata, the son acquired by Varuna was named Vasishtha, who, in time, became renowned as the sage Apava."' ॥ 1-93-5 ॥
