ताम ऊचुर वसवॊ देवाः शप्ताः समॊ वै महानदि अल्पे ऽपराधे संरम्भाद वसिष्ठेन महात्मना ॥ १-९१-११
'Those celestials, the Vasus, answered her, saying, 'O queen of rivers, we have been cursed, for a venial fault, by the illustrious Vasishtha in anger.' ॥ 1-91-11 ॥
english translation
विमूढा हि वयं सर्वे परच्छन्नम ऋषिसत्तमम संध्यां वसिष्ठम आसीनं तम अत्यभिसृताः पुरा ॥ १-९१-१२
'The greatest among sages, Vasishtha, was absorbed in his twilight meditations, seated as he was. We, in our ignorance, passed by him without noticing.' ॥ 1-91-12 ॥
english translation
तेन कॊपाद वयं शप्ता यॊनौ संभवतेति ह न शक्यम अन्यथा कर्तुं यद उक्तं बरह्मवादिना ॥ १-९१-१३
'Out of anger, we were cursed by him to be born in lower realms. What the speaker of Brahman has declared cannot be altered otherwise.' ॥ 1-91-13 ॥
english translation
तवं तस्मान मानुषी भूत्वा सूष्व पुत्रान वसून भुवि न मानुषीणां जठरं परविशेमाशुभं वयम ॥ १-९१-१४
'We are unable to thwart the decree of Brahma's word. Thus, O river, assuming a human form yourself, make us the Vasus, your offspring. O gracious one, we are unwilling to enter the womb of any human female.' ॥ 1-91-14 ॥
english translation
इत्य उक्ता तान वसून गङ्गा तथेत्य उक्त्वाब्रवीद इदम मर्त्येषु पुरुषश्रेष्ठः कॊ वः कर्ता भविष्यति ॥ १-९१-१५
'Upon being addressed, the queen of rivers responded, "So be it," and inquired of them, "Who is that paragon among men on earth whom you wish to have as your father?"' ॥ 1-91-15 ॥
