धृतराष्ट्रॊ ऽथ राजासीत तस्य पुत्रॊ ऽथ कुण्डिकः हस्ती वितर्कः कराथश च कुण्डलश चापि पञ्चमः हविः शरवास तथेन्द्राभः सुमन्युश चापराजितः ॥ १-८९-५१ ॥
'Among them Dhritarashtra became king. And Dhritarashtra had eight sons, viz., Kundika, Hasti, Vitarka, Kratha the fifth, Havihsravas, Indrabha, and Bhumanyu the invincible, and Dhritarashtra had many grandsons, of whom three only were famous.' ॥ 1-89-51 ॥

dhRtarASTrò 'tha rAjAsIta tasya putrò 'tha kuNDikaH hastI vitarkaH karAthaza ca kuNDalaza cApi paJcamaH haviH zaravAsa tathendrAbhaH sumanyuza cAparAjitaH ॥ 1-89-51 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptपरतीपस्य तरयः पुत्रा जज्ञिरे भरतर्षभ देवापिः शंतनुश चैव बाह्लीकश च महारथः ॥ १-८९-५२ ॥
'Among them, O king, were Pratipa, Dharmanetra, and Sunetra. Pratipa, distinguished among the three, became unparalleled on earth. O esteemed one of the Bharata lineage, Pratipa had three sons: Devapi, Santanu, and the valiant charioteer Valhika.' ॥ 1-89-52 ॥

paratIpasya tarayaH putrA jajJire bharatarSabha devApiH zaMtanuza caiva bAhlIkaza ca mahArathaH ॥ 1-89-52 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptदेवापिस तु परवव्राज तेषां धर्मपरीप्सया शंतनुश च महीं लेभे बाह्लीकश च महारथः ॥ १-८९-५३ ॥
'The eldest, Devapi, embraced an ascetic life, driven by the desire to benefit his brothers. Santanu inherited the kingdom, while the valiant charioteer Bahlika also acquired his share.' ॥ 1-89-53 ॥

devApisa tu paravavrAja teSAM dharmaparIpsayA zaMtanuza ca mahIM lebhe bAhlIkaza ca mahArathaH ॥ 1-89-53 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptभरतस्यान्वये जाताः सत्त्ववन्तॊ महारथाः देवर्षिकल्पा नृपते बहवॊ राजसत्तमाः ॥ १-८९-५४ ॥
'O monarch, besides, there was born in the race of Bharata numberless other excellent monarchs endued with great energy and like unto the celestial Rishis themselves in virtue and ascetic power.' ॥ 1-89-54 ॥

bharatasyAnvaye jAtAH sattvavantò mahArathAH devarSikalpA nRpate bahavò rAjasattamAH ॥ 1-89-54 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptएवंविधाश चाप्य अपरे देवकल्पा महारथाः जाता मनॊर अन्ववाये ऐल वंशविवर्धनाः ॥ १-८९-५५ ॥
'And so also in the race of Manu were born many mighty car-warriors like unto the celestials themselves, who by their number swelled the Aila dynasty into gigantic proportions.' ॥ 1-89-55 ॥
