[ज] शरुतस तवत्तॊ मया विप्र पूर्वेषां संभवॊ महान उदाराश चापि वंशे ऽसमिन राजानॊ मे परिश्रुताः ॥ १-९०-१ ॥
'Janamejaya said, 'O Brahmana, I have now heard from thee this great history of my ancestors. I had also heard from thee about the great monarchs that were born in this line.'' ॥ 1-90-1 ॥
english translation
[ja] zarutasa tavattò mayA vipra pUrveSAM saMbhavò mahAna udArAza cApi vaMze 'samina rAjAnò me parizrutAH ॥ 1-90-1 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptकिं तु लघ्व अर्थसंयुक्तं परियाख्यानं न माम अति परीणात्य अतॊ भवान भूयॊ विस्तरेण बरवीतु मे ॥ १-९०-२ ॥
'But I have not been gratified, this charming account being so short. Therefore, be pleased, O Brahmana, to recite the delightful narrative just in detail commencing from Manu, the lord of creation.' ॥ 1-90-2 ॥
english translation
kiM tu laghva arthasaMyuktaM pariyAkhyAnaM na mAma ati parINAtya atò bhavAna bhUyò vistareNa baravItu me ॥ 1-90-2 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptएताम एव कथां दिव्याम आप्रजा पतितॊ मनॊः तेषाम आजननं पुण्यं कस्य न परीतिम आवहेत ॥ १-९०-३ ॥
'This very divine story you have inquired about, descending from Manu, concerning their auspicious birth, who would it not please?' ॥ 1-90-3 ॥

etAma eva kathAM divyAma AprajA patitò manòH teSAma AjananaM puNyaM kasya na parItima Avaheta ॥ 1-90-3 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptसद धर्मगुणमाहात्म्यैर अभिवर्धितम उत्तमम विष्टभ्य लॊकांस तरीन एषां यशः सफीतम अवस्थितम ॥ १-९०-४ ॥
'The renown of these kings, augmented by their wisdom, virtue, achievements, and noble character, has expanded to encompass the three worlds.' ॥ 1-90-4 ॥

sada dharmaguNamAhAtmyaira abhivardhitama uttamama viSTabhya lòkAMsa tarIna eSAM yazaH saphItama avasthitama ॥ 1-90-4 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptगुणप्रभाव वीर्यौजः सत्त्वॊत्साहवताम अहम न तृप्यामि कथां शृण्वन्न अमृतास्वाद संमिताम ॥ १-९०-५ ॥
'Having listened to the history, sweet as nectar, of their liberality, prowess, physical strength, mental vigor, energy, and perseverance, I have not been satiated!' ॥ 1-90-5 ॥

guNaprabhAva vIryaujaH sattvòtsAhavatAma ahama na tRpyAmi kathAM zRNvanna amRtAsvAda saMmitAma ॥ 1-90-5 ॥
