[आ] चरन गृहस्थः कथम एति देवान; कथं भिक्षुः कथम आचार्य कर्मा वानप्रस्थः सत्पथे संनिविष्टॊ; बहून्य अस्मिन संप्रति वेदयन्ति ।। १-८६-१ ।।

sanskrit

'Ashtaka said, 'Those well-versed in the Vedas hold different opinions regarding the conduct suitable for individuals following each of the four stages of life: householders (Grihasthas), mendicants (Bhikshus), students (Brahmacharins), and forest-dwellers (Vanaprasthas), to attain religious merit. Currently, there are many interpretations of this.'' ।। 1-86-1 ।।

english translation

[A] carana gRhasthaH kathama eti devAna; kathaM bhikSuH kathama AcArya karmA vAnaprasthaH satpathe saMniviSTò; bahUnya asmina saMprati vedayanti || 1-86-1 ||

hk transliteration

[य] आहूताध्यायी गुरु कर्म सवचॊद्यः; पूर्वॊत्थायी चरमं चॊपशायी मृदुर दान्तॊ धृतिमान अप्रमत्तः; सवाध्यायशीलः सिध्यति बरह्म चारी ।। १-८६-२ ।।

sanskrit

'Yayati answered, 'A student devoted to the pursuit of knowledge, who duly serves his teacher, who is self-disciplined, rises before dawn, retires to bed last, gentle, self-controlled, steadfast, vigilant, and committed to his studies, achieves success in his spiritual endeavors.'' ।। 1-86-2 ।।

english translation

[ya] AhUtAdhyAyI guru karma savacòdyaH; pUrvòtthAyI caramaM còpazAyI mRdura dAntò dhRtimAna apramattaH; savAdhyAyazIlaH sidhyati barahma cArI || 1-86-2 ||

hk transliteration

धर्मागतं पराप्य धनं यजेत; दद्यात सदैवातिथीन भॊजयेच च अनाददानश च परैर अदत्तं; सैषा गृहस्थॊपनिषत पुराणी ।। १-८६-३ ।।

sanskrit

'It is taught in the ancient Upanishads that a householder, obtaining wealth through righteous means, should conduct sacrifices, continually practice charity, offer hospitality to all who come to his home, and should not consume anything without sharing a portion of it with others.' ।। 1-86-3 ।।

english translation

dharmAgataM parApya dhanaM yajeta; dadyAta sadaivAtithIna bhòjayeca ca anAdadAnaza ca paraira adattaM; saiSA gRhasthòpaniSata purANI || 1-86-3 ||

hk transliteration

सववीर्यजीवी वृजिनान निवृत्तॊ; दाता परेभ्यॊ न परॊपतापी तादृङ मुनिः सिद्धिम उपैति मुख्यां; वसन्न अरण्ये नियताहार चेष्टः ।। १-८६-४ ।।

sanskrit

'A sage, relying on his strength, should refrain from seeking the forest, abstain from all wicked deeds, give to charity, and never cause harm to any creature. Only then can he attain success.' ।। 1-86-4 ।।

english translation

savavIryajIvI vRjinAna nivRttò; dAtA parebhyò na paròpatApI tAdRGa muniH siddhima upaiti mukhyAM; vasanna araNye niyatAhAra ceSTaH || 1-86-4 ||

hk transliteration

अशिल्प जीवी नगृहश च नित्यं; जितेन्द्रियः सर्वतॊ विप्रमुक्तः अनॊक सारी लघुर अल्पचारश; चरन देशान एकचरः स भिक्षुः ।। १-८६-५ ।।

sanskrit

'A true Bhikshu does not rely on manual labor for sustenance, possesses profound skills, has mastered his desires, remains detached from worldly affairs, avoids sleeping under a homeowner's roof, lives without a spouse, and, travels modest distances daily, covers vast regions of the land.' ।। 1-86-5 ।।

azilpa jIvI nagRhaza ca nityaM; jitendriyaH sarvatò vipramuktaH anòka sArI laghura alpacAraza; carana dezAna ekacaraH sa bhikSuH || 1-86-5 ||
