[देव] दवाभ्यां कन्या सहस्राभ्यां दास्या शर्मिष्ठया सह तवदधीनास्मि भद्रं ते सखा भर्ता च मे भव ॥ १-७६-१६ ॥
'Devayani replied, "With my two thousand companions and my attendant Sarmishtha, I await your orders. May prosperity be unto you. Become my friend and master." ' ॥ 1-76-16 ॥
english translation
[य] विद्ध्य औशनसि भद्रं ते न तवाम अर्हॊ ऽसमि भामिनि अविवाह्या हि राजानॊ देव यानि पितुस तव ॥ १-७६-१७ ॥
'Yayati then replied, 'Fair maiden, I am unworthy of you. You are the daughter of Sukra, far superior to me. Your father cannot bestow you even upon a great king.''॥ 1-76-17 ॥
english translation
[देव] संसृष्टं बरह्मणा कषत्रं कषत्रं च बरह्म संहितम ऋषिश च ऋषिपुत्रश च नाहुषाङ्ग वदस्व माम ॥ १-७६-१८ ॥
'Devayani responded, "Brahmins have been previously united with Kshatriyas, and Kshatriyas with Brahmins. You are the son of a sage and a sage yourself. Therefore, O descendant of Nahusha, marry me."' ॥ 1-76-18 ॥

[य] एकदेहॊद्भवा वर्णाश चत्वारॊ ऽपि वराङ्गने पृथग धर्माः पृथक शौचास तेषां तु बराह्मणॊ वरः ॥ १-७६-१९ ॥
'"O possessor of the most beautiful features," replied Yayati, "indeed, the four castes have emerged from one entity. However, their responsibilities and purity differ, with the Brahmin being truly superior to all."' ॥ 1-76-19 ॥

[देव] पाणिधर्मॊ नाहुषायं न पुम्भिः सेवितः पुरा तं मे तवम अग्रहीर अग्रे वृणॊमि तवाम अहं ततः ॥ १-७६-२० ॥
'Devayani replied, "No man has ever touched my hand before except you. Therefore, I accept you as my husband." ' ॥ 1-76-20 ॥
