[ज] य एते कीर्तिता बरह्मन ये चान्ये नानुकीर्तिताः सम्यक ताञ शरॊतुम इच्छामि राज्ञश चान्यान सुवर्चसः ॥ १-५८-१ ॥
'Janamejaya said, "O Brahmana, I wish to hear in detail about both those you have named and those you have not named, as well as about thousands of other kings."' ॥ 1-58-1 ॥
english translation
[ja] ya ete kIrtitA barahmana ye cAnye nAnukIrtitAH samyaka tAJa zaròtuma icchAmi rAjJaza cAnyAna suvarcasaH ॥ 1-58-1 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptयदर्थम इह संभूता देवकल्पा महारथाः भुवि तन मे महाभाग सम्यग आख्यातुम अर्हसि ॥ १-५८-२ ॥
'And, O fortunate one, it is fitting for you to elucidate in full the purpose for which those mighty warriors, equal to the celestial beings, have taken birth on earth.' ॥ 1-58-2 ॥
english translation
yadarthama iha saMbhUtA devakalpA mahArathAH bhuvi tana me mahAbhAga samyaga AkhyAtuma arhasi ॥ 1-58-2 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscript[व] रहस्यं खल्व इदं राजन देवानाम इति नः शरुतम तत तु ते कथयिष्यामि नमस्कृत्वा सवयं भुवे ॥ १-५८-३ ॥
'Vaisampayana said, 'It hath been heard by us, O monarch, that what thou askest is a mystery even to the gods. I shall, however, speak of it unto thee, after bowing down (to the self-born).' ॥ 1-58-3 ॥

[va] rahasyaM khalva idaM rAjana devAnAma iti naH zarutama tata tu te kathayiSyAmi namaskRtvA savayaM bhuve ॥ 1-58-3 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतरिः सप्तकृत्वः पृथिवीं कृत्वा निःक्षत्रियां पुरा जामदग्न्यस तपस तेपे महेन्द्रे पर्वतॊत्तमे ॥ १-५८-४ ॥
'The son of Jamadagni (Parasurama), after twenty-one times making the earth bereft of Kshatriyas wended to that best of mountains Mahendra and there began his ascetic penances.' ॥ 1-58-4 ॥

tariH saptakRtvaH pRthivIM kRtvA niHkSatriyAM purA jAmadagnyasa tapasa tepe mahendre parvatòttame ॥ 1-58-4 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतदा निःक्षत्रिये लॊके भार्गवेण कृते सति बराह्मणान कषत्रिया राजन गर्भार्थिन्यॊ ऽभिचक्रमुः ॥ १-५८-५ ॥
'At that time, when the earth was devoid of Kshatriyas, the Kshatriya women, eager for progeny, would approach the Brahmanas.' ॥ 1-58-5 ॥

tadA niHkSatriye lòke bhArgaveNa kRte sati barAhmaNAna kaSatriyA rAjana garbhArthinyò 'bhicakramuH ॥ 1-58-5 ॥
