लॊमहर्षण पुत्र उग्रश्रवाः सूतः पौराणिकॊ नैमिषारण्ये शौनकस्य कुलपतेर दवादश वार्षिके सत्रे ऋषीन अभ्यागतान उपतस्थे ॥ १-४-१ ॥
'UGRASRAVA SAUTI, the son of Lomaharshana, versed in the Puranas, while present in the forest of Naimisha, at the twelve years' sacrifice of Saunaka, surnamed Kulapati, stood before the Rishis in attendance.' ॥ 1-4-1 ॥

lòmaharSaNa putra ugrazravAH sUtaH paurANikò naimiSAraNye zaunakasya kulapatera davAdaza vArSike satre RSIna abhyAgatAna upatasthe ॥ 1-4-1 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptपौराणिकः पुराणे कृतश्रमः स तान कृताञ्जलिर उवाच किं भवन्तः शरॊतुम इच्छन्ति किम अहं बरुवाणीति ॥ १-४-२ ॥
'Having studied Puranas with meticulous devotion and thus being thoroughly acquainted with them, addressed them and said, "What would you like to hear, and what should I speak?"' ॥ 1-4-2 ॥

paurANikaH purANe kRtazramaH sa tAna kRtAJjalira uvAca kiM bhavantaH zaròtuma icchanti kima ahaM baruvANIti ॥ 1-4-2 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतम ऋषय ऊचुः परमं लॊमहर्षणे परक्ष्यामस तवां वक्ष्यसि च नः शुश्रूषतां कथा यॊगम तद भगवांस तु तावच छौनकॊ ऽगनिशरणम अध्यास्ते ॥ १-४-३ ॥
'The sages responded, "O descendant of Lomaharshana, we eagerly seek the narratives we desire to hear, and you shall unfold those tales one by one. Saunaka, our esteemed leader, is presently engaged in the sanctum of the sacred fire."' ॥ 1-4-3 ॥
english translation
tama RSaya UcuH paramaM lòmaharSaNe parakSyAmasa tavAM vakSyasi ca naH zuzrUSatAM kathA yògama tada bhagavAMsa tu tAvaca chaunakò 'ganizaraNama adhyAste ॥ 1-4-3 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptयॊ ऽसौ दिव्याः कथा वेद देवतासुरसंकथाः मनुष्यॊरगगन्धर्वकथा वेद स सर्वशः ॥ १-४-४ ॥
'He is familiar with the celestial tales that pertain to both gods and asuras. His knowledge extends to the histories of humans, serpents, and Gandharvas.' ॥ 1-4-4 ॥

yò 'sau divyAH kathA veda devatAsurasaMkathAH manuSyòragagandharvakathA veda sa sarvazaH ॥ 1-4-4 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptस चाप्य अस्मिन मखे सौते विद्वान कुलपतिर दविजः दक्षॊ धृतव्रतॊ धीमाञ शास्त्रे चारण्यके गुरुः ॥ १-४-५ ॥
'In this sacrificial ceremony, the wise and learned chief of the clan, Daksha, steadfast in his vows and possessing discerning intellect, is the revered preceptor in the domain of Vedic knowledge.' ॥ 1-4-5 ॥

sa cApya asmina makhe saute vidvAna kulapatira davijaH dakSò dhRtavratò dhImAJa zAstre cAraNyake guruH ॥ 1-4-5 ॥
