अथ शुश्राव गच्छन स तक्षकॊ जगतीपतिम मन्त्रागदैर विषहरै रक्ष्यमाणं परयत्नतः ॥ १-३९-२१ ॥
'And on his way he heard that the king was living very cautiously, protected using poison-neutralising mantras and medicines.' ॥ 1-39-21 ॥
english translation
स चिन्तयाम आस तदा मायायॊगेन पार्थिवः मया वञ्चयितव्यॊ ऽसौ क उपायॊ भवेद इति ॥ १-३९-२२ ॥
'Sauti continued, 'In response, the snake pondered, 'I must deceive the king using the power of illusion. Now, what should be the means?' ॥ 1-39-22 ॥
english translation
ततस तापसरूपेण पराहिणॊत स भुजंगमान फलपत्रॊदकं गृह्य राज्ञे नागॊ ऽथ तक्षकः ॥ १-३९-२३ ॥
'Then Takshaka sent to the king some snakes in the guise of ascetics taking with them fruits, kusa grass, and water (as presents).' ॥ 1-39-23 ॥
english translation
[त] गच्छध्वं यूयम अव्यग्रा राजानं कार्यवत्तया फलपत्रॊदकं नाम परतिग्राहयितुं नृपम ॥ १-३९-२४ ॥
'And Takshaka, addressing them, instructed, "Approach the king with a semblance of urgency under the pretext of important matters, concealing any impatience, as if your sole purpose is to offer him fruits, flowers, and water as presents."' ॥ 1-39-24 ॥

[स] ते तक्षक समादिष्टास तथा चक्रुर भुजंगमाः उपनिन्युस तथा राज्ञे दर्भान आपः फलानि च ॥ १-३९-२५ ॥
'Sauti continued, 'Those snakes, thus commanded by Takshaka, acted accordingly. And they took to the king, Kusa grass and water, and fruits.' ॥ 1-39-25 ॥
