[ष] भुजंगमानां शापस्य मात्रा चैव सुतेन च विनतायास तवया परॊक्तं कारणं सूतनन्दन ॥ १-३१-१ ॥
'Saunaka said, 'O son of Suta, thou hast told us the reason why the snakes were cursed by their mother, and why Vinata also was cursed by her son.' ॥ 1-31-1 ॥
english translation
[Sa] bhujaMgamAnAM zApasya mAtrA caiva sutena ca vinatAyAsa tavayA paròktaM kAraNaM sUtanandana ॥ 1-31-1 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptवरप्रदानं भर्त्रा च करद्रू विनतयॊस तथा नामनी चैव ते परॊक्ते पक्षिणॊर वैनतेययॊः ॥ १-३१-२ ॥
'You have also informed us about the granting of boons to Kadru and Vinata by their respective husbands. Additionally, you have provided the names of Vinata's sons.' ॥ 1-31-2 ॥

varapradAnaM bhartrA ca karadrU vinatayòsa tathA nAmanI caiva te paròkte pakSiNòra vainateyayòH ॥ 1-31-2 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptपन्नगानां तु नामानि न कीर्तयसि सूतज पराधान्येनापि नामानि शरॊतुम इच्छामहे वयम ॥ १-३१-३ ॥
'But thou hast not yet recited to us the names of the snakes. We are anxious to hear the names of the principal ones.' ॥ 1-31-3 ॥

pannagAnAM tu nAmAni na kIrtayasi sUtaja parAdhAnyenApi nAmAni zaròtuma icchAmahe vayama ॥ 1-31-3 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscript[स] बहुत्वान नामधेयानि भुजगानां तपॊधन न कीर्तयिष्ये सर्वेषां पराधान्येन तु मे शृणु ॥ १-३१-४ ॥
'Sauti said, O thou whose wealth is asceticism, from fear of being lengthy, I shall not mention the names of all the snakes. But I will recite the names of the chief ones. Listen to me!' ॥ 1-31-4 ॥

[sa] bahutvAna nAmadheyAni bhujagAnAM tapòdhana na kIrtayiSye sarveSAM parAdhAnyena tu me zRNu ॥ 1-31-4 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptशेषः परथमतॊ जातॊ वासुकिस तदनन्तरम ऐरावतस तक्षकश च कर्कॊटक धनंजयौ ॥ १-३१-५ ॥
'Firstly, Shesha was born, followed by Vasuki. After that, came Airavata, Takshaka, and Karkotaka, O Dhananjaya (Arjuna).' ॥ 1-31-5 ॥
