स तां पुनर उवाच नापराध्यामि किं चित नावेक्षे हवींषि नावलिह इति ॥ १-३-६ ॥
'He answered, 'I have not committed any fault. I have not touched the sacrificial butter with my tongue, nor have I even cast a look upon it.' ॥ 1-3-6 ॥
english translation
sa tAM punara uvAca nAparAdhyAmi kiM cita nAvekSe havIMSi nAvaliha iti ॥ 1-3-6 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतच छरुत्वा तस्य माता सरमा पुत्रशॊकार्ता तत सत्रम उपागच्छद यत्र सजनमेजयः सह भरातृभिर दीर्घसत्रम उपास्ते ॥ १-३-७ ॥
' His mother Sarama hearing this and much distressed at the affliction of her son went to the place where Janamejaya with his brothers was at his long-extending sacrifice.' ॥ 1-3-7 ॥
english translation
taca charutvA tasya mAtA saramA putrazòkArtA tata satrama upAgacchada yatra sajanamejayaH saha bharAtRbhira dIrghasatrama upAste ॥ 1-3-7 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptस तया करुद्धया तत्रॊक्तः अयं मे पुत्रॊ न किं चिद अपराध्यति किमर्थम अभिहत इति यस्माच चायम अभिहतॊ ऽनपकारी तस्माद अदृष्टं तवां भयम आगमिष्यतीति ॥ १-३-८ ॥
' And she addressed Janamejaya in anger, saying, 'This my son hath committed no fault: he hath not looked upon your sacrificial butter, nor hath he touched it with his tongue. Wherefore hath he been beaten?' They said not a word in reply; whereupon she said, 'As ye have beaten my son who hath committed no fault, therefore shall evil come upon ye, when ye least expect it.' ॥ 1-3-8 ॥
english translation
sa tayA karuddhayA tatròktaH ayaM me putrò na kiM cida aparAdhyati kimarthama abhihata iti yasmAca cAyama abhihatò 'napakArI tasmAda adRSTaM tavAM bhayama AgamiSyatIti ॥ 1-3-8 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptसजनमेजय एवम उक्तॊ देव शुन्या सरमया दृढं संभ्रान्तॊ विषण्णश चासीत ॥ १-३-९ ॥
'Janamejaya, thus addressed by the celestial bitch, Sarama, became exceedingly alarmed and dejected. ' ॥ 1-3-9 ॥
english translation
sajanamejaya evama uktò deva zunyA saramayA dRDhaM saMbhrAntò viSaNNaza cAsIta ॥ 1-3-9 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptस तस्मिन सत्रे समाप्ते हास्तिनपुरं परत्येत्य पुरॊहितम अनुरूपम अन्विच्छमानः परं यत्नम अकरॊद यॊ मे पापकृत्यां शमयेद इति ॥ १-३-१० ॥
'Upon completion of the sacrifice, he returned to Hastinapura and earnestly endeavored to find a knowledgeable priest who could help him seek absolution for his sins and mitigate the impact of the curse. ' ॥ 1-3-10 ॥

sa tasmina satre samApte hAstinapuraM paratyetya puròhitama anurUpama anvicchamAnaH paraM yatnama akaròda yò me pApakRtyAM zamayeda iti ॥ 1-3-10 ॥
