तम अग्निः परार्थयाम आस दिधक्षुर वातसारथिः देहवान वै जटी भूत्वा नदंश च जलदॊ यथा जिघांसुर वासुदेवश च चक्रम उद्यम्य विष्ठितः ॥ १-२१९-३६ ॥
'With Vayu as his charioteer, Agni assumed a form with matted locks on his head and roared like thundering clouds as he pursued the Asura, eager to consume him. Seeing the Asura and Agni approaching from behind with his blazing presence, Vasudeva stood ready with his weapon uplifted.' ॥ 1-219-36 ॥

सचक्रम उद्यतं दृष्ट्वा दिधक्षुं च हुताशनम अभिधावार्जुनेत्य एवं मयश चुक्रॊश भारत ॥ १-२१९-३७ ॥
'Maya, seeing the imminent danger, cried out in fear, "O Arjuna, come quickly and protect me!"' ॥ 1-219-37 ॥

तस्य भीतस्वनं शरुत्वा मा भैर इति धनंजयः परत्युवाच मयं पार्थॊ जीवयन्न इव भारत ॥ १-२१९-३८ ॥
'Upon hearing Maya's fearful voice, Arjuna reassured him, saying, "Fear not, O Bharata!"' ॥ 1-219-38 ॥

तं पार्थेनाभये दत्ते नमुचेर भरातरं मयम न हन्तुम ऐच्छद दाशार्हः पावकॊ न ददाह च ॥ १-२१९-३९ ॥
'The compassionate words of Arjuna seemed to revive Maya. Hearing this assurance from the son of Pritha, who was known for his mercy, Vasudeva no longer desired to harm Maya, who was Namuchi's brother. Agni, too, refrained from burning him.' ॥ 1-219-39 ॥

तस्मिन वने दह्यमाने षड अग्निर न ददाह च अश्वसेनं मयं चापि चतुरः शार्ङ्गकान इति ॥ १-२१९-४० ॥
'Vaisampayana continued, 'Protected by Krishna and Partha from Indra, Agni, endowed with great intelligence, burned that forest for fifteen days. During the conflagration, Agni spared only six inhabitants of the forest: Aswasena, Maya, and four birds known as Sarngakas.'' ॥ 1-219-40 ॥
