इदम इन्द्रः सदा दावं खाण्डवं परिरक्षति तं न शक्नॊम्य अहं दग्धुं रक्ष्यमाणं महात्मना ॥ १-२१५-६ ॥

'The speaker lamented his inability to set ablaze the Khandava forest, which remained impervious to fire due to the constant, vigilant protection of Indra, the mighty king of the gods.' ॥ 1-215-6 ॥

english translation

idama indraH sadA dAvaM khANDavaM parirakSati taM na zaknòmya ahaM dagdhuM rakSyamANaM mahAtmanA ॥ 1-215-6 ॥

वसत्य अत्र सखा तस्य तक्षकः पन्नगः सदा सगणस तत कृते दावं परिरक्षति वज्रभृत ॥ १-२१५-७ ॥

'In that forest resides Takshaka, a Naga along with his followers and family, who is a friend of Indra. It is for him that the wielder of the thunderbolt protects this forest.' ॥ 1-215-7 ॥

english translation

vasatya atra sakhA tasya takSakaH pannagaH sadA sagaNasa tata kRte dAvaM parirakSati vajrabhRta ॥ 1-215-7 ॥

तत्र भूतान्य अनेकानि रक्ष्यन्ते सम परसङ्गतः तं दिधक्षुर न शक्नॊमि दग्धुं शक्रस्य तेजसा ॥ १-२१५-८ ॥

'Many other creatures here are also protected for Takshaka's sake. Though I desire greatly to consume the forest, I cannot succeed due to Indra's power.' ॥ 1-215-8 ॥

tatra bhUtAnya anekAni rakSyante sama parasaGgataH taM didhakSura na zaknòmi dagdhuM zakrasya tejasA ॥ 1-215-8 ॥

स मां परज्वलितं दृष्ट्वा मेघाम्भॊभिः परवर्षति ततॊ दग्धुं न शक्नॊमि दिधक्षुर दावम ईप्सितम ॥ १-२१५-९ ॥

'Seeing me blazing, he always pours water from the clouds upon me. Therefore, despite my strong desire, I cannot consume the Khandava forest.' ॥ 1-215-9 ॥

sa mAM parajvalitaM dRSTvA meghAmbhòbhiH paravarSati tatò dagdhuM na zaknòmi didhakSura dAvama Ipsitama ॥ 1-215-9 ॥

स युवाभ्यां सहायाभ्याम अस्त्रविद्भ्यां समागतः दहेयं खाण्डवं दावम एतद अन्नं वृतं मया ॥ १-२१५-१० ॥

'The divine being declared his intention to consume the Khandava forest by fire, revealing that with the assistance of the two weapon-masters before him, he could finally overcome Indra's protection and satisfy his burning desire.' ॥ 1-215-10 ॥

sa yuvAbhyAM sahAyAbhyAma astravidbhyAM samAgataH daheyaM khANDavaM dAvama etada annaM vRtaM mayA ॥ 1-215-10 ॥
