तद आदाय च लुब्धस्य लाभाल लॊभॊ वयवर्धत तथा हि सर्वम आदाय राज्यम अस्य जिहीर्षति ।। १-१९६-२१ ।।

sanskrit

'Yet, instead of satisfying his avarice, these possessions only fueled his greed further. Having seized all that belonged to the king, he even coveted the throne itself.' ।। 1-196-21 ।।

english translation

tada AdAya ca lubdhasya lAbhAla lòbhò vayavardhata tathA hi sarvama AdAya rAjyama asya jihIrSati || 1-196-21 ||

hk transliteration

हीनस्य करणैः सर्वैर उच्छ्वासपरमस्य च यतमानॊ ऽपि तद राज्यं न शशाकेति नः शरुतम ।। १-१९६-२२ ।।

sanskrit

'It has been heard that despite his best efforts, he could not acquire the kingdom of his master, the monarch, even though the latter was negligent in his duties and content with mere breathing.' ।। 1-196-22 ।।

english translation

hInasya karaNaiH sarvaira ucchvAsaparamasya ca yatamAnò 'pi tada rAjyaM na zazAketi naH zarutama || 1-196-22 ||

hk transliteration

किम अन्यद विहितान नूनं तस्य सा पुरुषेन्द्रता यदि ते विहितं राज्यं भविष्यति विशां पते ।। १-१९६-२३ ।।

sanskrit

'What more can be said, O king, than that the sovereignty of that monarch depended on destiny?' ।। 1-196-23 ।।

english translation

kima anyada vihitAna nUnaM tasya sA puruSendratA yadi te vihitaM rAjyaM bhaviSyati vizAM pate || 1-196-23 ||

hk transliteration

मिषतः सर्वलॊकस्य सथास्यते तवयि तद धरुवम अतॊ ऽनयथा चेद विहितं यतमानॊ न लप्स्यसे ।। १-१९६-२४ ।।

sanskrit

'Therefore, O king, if this kingdom is destined to be established in you, it will surely remain with you, even if the entire world were to oppose you!' ।। 1-196-24 ।।

english translation

miSataH sarvalòkasya sathAsyate tavayi tada dharuvama atò 'nayathA ceda vihitaM yatamAnò na lapsyase || 1-196-24 ||

hk transliteration

एवं विद्वन्न उपादत्स्व मन्त्रिणां साध्व असाधुताम दुष्टानां चैव बॊद्धव्यम अदुष्टानां च भाषितम ।। १-१९६-२५ ।।

sanskrit

'If destiny has ordained otherwise, no matter how hard you strive, it will not endure with you! O learned one, keeping this in mind, assess the integrity of your advisors. Determine who among them are wicked and who have spoken wisely and well.' ।। 1-196-25 ।।

english translation

evaM vidvanna upAdatsva mantriNAM sAdhva asAdhutAma duSTAnAM caiva bòddhavyama aduSTAnAM ca bhASitama || 1-196-25 ||
