sanskrit

'Vaisampayana said, "Asked by Dhritarashtra for his opinion, Bhishma replied, 'O Dhritarashtra, I can never approve of a quarrel with the Pandavas. As you are to me, so was Pandu without a doubt.'"' ।। 1-195-1 ।।

english translation

गान्धार्याश च यथा पुत्रास तथा कुन्तीसुता मताः यथा च मम ते रक्ष्या धृतराष्ट्र तथा तव ।। १-१९५-२ ।।

sanskrit

'The sons of Gandhari are as dear to me as those of Kunti. I should protect them just as I would protect your sons, O Dhritarashtra!' ।। 1-195-2 ।।

gAndhAryAza ca yathA putrAsa tathA kuntIsutA matAH yathA ca mama te rakSyA dhRtarASTra tathA tava || 1-195-2 ||

'And, O king, the Pandavas are equally close to me as they are to Prince Duryodhana or any other Kuru.' ।। 1-195-3 ।।

yathA ca mama rAjJaza ca tathA duryòdhanasya te tathA kurUNAM sarveSAma anyeSAma api bhArata || 1-195-3 ||

एवंगते विग्रहं तैर न रॊचये; संधाय वीरैर दीयताम अद्य भूमिः तेषाम अपीदं परपितामहानां; राज्यं पितुश चैव कुरूत्तमानाम ।। १-१९५-४ ।।

sanskrit

'Under these circumstances, I do not favor a quarrel with them. Let us conclude a treaty with those heroes and grant them half the kingdom. Surely, this is the rightful paternal inheritance of those foremost in the Kuru lineage.' ।। 1-195-4 ।।

english translation

evaMgate vigrahaM taira na ròcaye; saMdhAya vIraira dIyatAma adya bhUmiH teSAma apIdaM parapitAmahAnAM; rAjyaM pituza caiva kurUttamAnAma || 1-195-4 ||

दुर्यॊधन यथा राज्यं तवम इदं तात पश्यसि मम पैतृकम इत्य एवं ते ऽपि पश्यन्ति पाण्डवाः ।। १-१९५-५ ।।

'And, O Duryodhana, just as you consider this kingdom your paternal property, so too do the Pandavas regard it as their rightful inheritance.' ।। 1-195-5 ।।

duryòdhana yathA rAjyaM tavama idaM tAta pazyasi mama paitRkama itya evaM te 'pi pazyanti pANDavAH || 1-195-5 ||
