स मेरुकूटाद आत्मानं मुमॊच भगवान ऋषिः शिरस तस्य शिलायां च तूलराशाव इवापतत ॥ १-१६६-४१ ॥
'The illustrious sage descended from the summit of Mount Meru, but as he fell upon the stony ground, it seemed as gentle as a heap of cotton.' ॥ 1-166-41 ॥
english translation
न ममार च पातेन स यदा तेन पाण्डव तदाग्निम इद्ध्वा भगवान संविवेश महावने ॥ १-१६६-४२ ॥
'And, O son of Pandu, upon realizing that death did not befall him from the fall, the illustrious sage ignited a massive fire in the forest and entered it with determination.' ॥ 1-166-42 ॥
english translation
तं तदा सुसमिद्धॊ ऽपि न ददाह हुताशनः दीप्यमानॊ ऽपय अमित्रघ्न शीतॊ ऽगनिर अभवत ततः ॥ १-१६६-४३ ॥
'But despite burning brightly, that fire did not consume him. O conqueror of foes, to him, that blazing fire appeared cool.' ॥ 1-166-43 ॥

स समुद्रम अभिप्रेत्य शॊकाविष्टॊ महामुनिः बद्ध्वा कण्ठे शिलां गुर्वीं निपपात तद अम्भसि ॥ १-१६६-४४ ॥
'In his anguish, the great sage, upon seeing the sea, fastened a stone around his neck and cast himself into its depths.' ॥ 1-166-44 ॥
english translation
स समुद्रॊर्मि वेगेन सथले नयस्तॊ महामुनिः जगाम स ततः खिन्नः पुनर एवाश्रमं परति ॥ १-१६६-४५ ॥
'However, the waves soon washed him ashore. Eventually, unable to end his life by any means, the Brahmin of steadfast vows, distressed, returned to his hermitage.' ॥ 1-166-45 ॥
