[वै] तयॊर दुःखितयॊर वाक्यम अतिमात्रं निशम्य तत भृशं दुःखपरीताङ्गी कन्या ताव अभ्यभाषत ॥ १-१४७-१ ॥
'Vaisampayana said, 'Upon hearing these words from her sorrowful parents, the daughter, overwhelmed with grief, spoke to them, saying.'' ॥ 1-147-1 ॥
english translation
[vai] tayòra duHkhitayòra vAkyama atimAtraM nizamya tata bhRzaM duHkhaparItAGgI kanyA tAva abhyabhASata ॥ 1-147-1 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptकिम इदं भृशदुःखार्तौ रॊरवीथॊ अनाथवत ममापि शरूयतां किं चिच छरुत्वा च करियतां कषमम ॥ १-१४७-२ ॥
'Why are you both so afflicted and why do you weep as if you have no one to care for you? Please listen to me and do what is appropriate.' ॥ 1-147-2 ॥
english translation
kima idaM bhRzaduHkhArtau ròravIthò anAthavata mamApi zarUyatAM kiM cica charutvA ca kariyatAM kaSamama ॥ 1-147-2 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptधर्मतॊ ऽहं परित्याज्या युवयॊर नात्र संशयः तयक्तव्यां मां परित्यज्य तरातं सर्वं मयैकया ॥ १-१४७-३ ॥
'It is certain that you are duty-bound to abandon me at a certain time. Since you are bound to abandon me eventually, do so now and save everything at my expense alone.' ॥ 1-147-3 ॥
english translation
dharmatò 'haM parityAjyA yuvayòra nAtra saMzayaH tayaktavyAM mAM parityajya tarAtaM sarvaM mayaikayA ॥ 1-147-3 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptइत्य अर्थम इष्यते ऽपत्यं तारयिष्यति माम इति तस्मिन्न उपस्थिते काले तरतं पलववन मया ॥ १-१४७-४ ॥
'Men desire children, believing that children will provide them with support in this world and in the afterlife. Therefore, cross the stream of your difficulties using me as a humble raft.' ॥ 1-147-4 ॥
english translation
itya arthama iSyate 'patyaM tArayiSyati mAma iti tasminna upasthite kAle tarataM palavavana mayA ॥ 1-147-4 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptइह वा तारयेद दुर्गाद उत वा परेत्य तारयेत सर्वथा तारयेत पुत्रः पुत्र इत्य उच्यते बुधैः ॥ १-१४७-५ ॥
'A child rescues their parents in both this world and the next; that's why the learned call a child 'Putra' (savior).' ॥ 1-147-5 ॥

iha vA tArayeda durgAda uta vA paretya tArayeta sarvathA tArayeta putraH putra itya ucyate budhaiH ॥ 1-147-5 ॥
