मन्यन्ते के चिद अधिकं सनेहं पुत्रे पितुर नराः कन्यायां नैव तु पुनर मम तुल्याव उभौ मतौ ॥ १-१४५-३६ ॥

'Some think a father's affection for a son is greater, others say it is greater for a daughter, but mine is equal for both.' ॥ 1-145-36 ॥

english translation

manyante ke cida adhikaM sanehaM putre pitura narAH kanyAyAM naiva tu punara mama tulyAva ubhau matau ॥ 1-145-36 ॥

यस्मिँल लॊकाः परसूतिश च सथिता नित्यम अथॊ सुखम अपापां ताम अहं बालां कथम उत्स्रष्टुम उत्सहे ॥ १-१४५-३७ ॥

'How can I be prepared to give up my innocent daughter upon whom rests my attainment of heavenly abodes in the afterlife, the continuation of my lineage, and perpetual happiness?' ॥ 1-145-37 ॥

yasmi~la lòkAH parasUtiza ca sathitA nityama athò sukhama apApAM tAma ahaM bAlAM kathama utsraSTuma utsahe ॥ 1-145-37 ॥

आत्मानम अपि चॊत्सृज्य तप्स्ये परेतवशं गतः तयक्ता हय एते मया वयक्तं नेह शक्ष्यन्ति जीवितुम ॥ १-१४५-३८ ॥

'If I sacrifice myself and go to the other world, I would find no peace, for it is evident that left behind, these loved ones would not be able to sustain life.' ॥ 1-145-38 ॥

english translation

AtmAnama api còtsRjya tapsye paretavazaM gataH tayaktA haya ete mayA vayaktaM neha zakSyanti jIvituma ॥ 1-145-38 ॥

एषां चान्यतम तयागॊ नृशंसॊ गर्हितॊ बुधैः आत्मत्यागे कृते चेमे मरिष्यन्ति मया विना ॥ १-१४५-३९ ॥

'The abandonment of any one of them would be an act of utmost cruelty, condemned by the wise. If I sacrifice myself, these loved ones will certainly die without me ' ॥ 1-145-39 ॥

eSAM cAnyatama tayAgò nRzaMsò garhitò budhaiH AtmatyAge kRte ceme mariSyanti mayA vinA ॥ 1-145-39 ॥

स कृच्छ्राम अहम आपन्नॊ न शक्तस तर्तुम आपदम अहॊ धिक कां गतिं तव अद्य गमिष्यामि सबान्धवः सर्वैः सह मृतं शरेयॊ न तु मे जीवितुं कषमम ॥ १-१४५-४० ॥

'I have fallen into great distress and am unable to overcome this calamity. Alas, what course shall I take today regarding my loved ones? I should die along with all of them, for I cannot continue living.' ॥ 1-145-40 ॥

english translation

sa kRcchrAma ahama Apannò na zaktasa tartuma Apadama ahò dhika kAM gatiM tava adya gamiSyAmi sabAndhavaH sarvaiH saha mRtaM zareyò na tu me jIvituM kaSamama ॥ 1-145-40 ॥
