[वै] परबुद्धास ते हिडिम्बाया रूपं दृष्ट्वातिमानुषम विस्मिताः पुरुषा वयाघ्रा बभूवुः पृथया सह ॥ १-१४२-१ ॥
'Vaishampayana said: "Those tiger-like men, along with Prithu, awakened from sleep and beholding the supernatural beauty of Hidimba, were filled with wonder, O wise ones learned in the past."' ॥ 1-142-1 ॥
english translation
ततः कुन्ती समीक्ष्यैनां विस्मिता रूपसंपदा उवाच मधुरं वाक्यं सान्त्वपूर्वम इदं शनैः ॥ १-१४२-२ ॥
'Then Kunti, beholding her and amazed by her beauty, spoke these sweet and soothing words gently:' ॥ 1-142-2 ॥
english translation
कस्य तवं सुरगर्भाभे का चासि वरवर्णिनि केन कार्येण सुश्रॊणि कुतश चागमनं तव ॥ १-१४२-३ ॥
'Kunti asked: "O you who have the splendid form of a celestial maiden, whose daughter are you and who are you yourself? O fair lady of beautiful complexion, what purpose has brought you here and from where have you come?"' ॥ 1-142-3 ॥
english translation
यदि वास्य वनस्यासि देवता यदि वाप्सराः आचक्ष्व मम तत सर्वं किमर्थं चेह तिष्ठसि ॥ १-१४२-४ ॥
'If you are a deity of this forest or a celestial nymph, then tell me all about yourself. And what is the purpose for which you are staying here?' ॥ 1-142-4 ॥
english translation
[हिडिम्बा] यद एतत पश्यसि वनं नीलमेघनिभं महत निवासॊ राक्षसस्यैतद धिडिम्बस्य ममैव च ॥ १-१४२-५ ॥
'Hidimva answered, 'This great forest that you see, resembling dark clouds, is the abode of the Rakshasa Hidimba, and it is also my dwelling.'' ॥ 1-142-5 ॥
