कृत्रिमं भासम आरॊप्य वृक्षाग्रे शिल्पिभिः कृतम अविज्ञातं कुमाराणां लक्ष्यभूतम उपादिशत ॥ १-१२३-४६ ॥
'O mighty one, one day Drona, eager to assess the prowess of all his students in archery, gathered them together upon completing their education. Before their assembly, he had arranged for an artificial bird to be placed atop a nearby tree as the target.' ॥ 1-123-46 ॥

[दरॊण] शीघ्रं भवन्तः सर्वे वै धनूंष्य आदाय सत्वराः भासम एतं समुद्दिश्य तिष्ठन्तां संहितेषवः ॥ १-१२३-४७ ॥
'Gathering them all together, Drona instructed, "Quickly, take up your bows and stand here, aiming at that bird on the tree."' ॥ 1-123-47 ॥

मद्वाक्यसमकालं च शिरॊ ऽसय विनिपात्यताम एकैकशॊ नियॊक्ष्यामि तथा कुरुत पुत्रकाः ॥ १-१२३-४८ ॥
'At my command and simultaneously, let each of you release your arrows. Do as I say, my sons.' ॥ 1-123-48 ॥

[वै] ततॊ युधिष्ठिरं पूर्वम उवाचाङ्गिरसां वरः संधत्स्व बाणं दुर्धर्षं मद्वाक्यान्ते विमुञ्च च ॥ १-१२३-४९ ॥
'Vaisampayana continued, 'Then Drona, the preeminent among Angira's descendants, addressed Yudhishthira first, saying, "O indomitable one, aim with your arrow and release it as soon as I command.'' ॥ 1-123-49 ॥

ततॊ युधिष्ठिरः पूर्वं धनुर गृह्य महारवम तस्थौ भासं समुद्दिश्य गुरुवाक्यप्रचॊदितः ॥ १-१२३-५० ॥
'Then Yudhishthira, first taking up his bow, stood facing the bird, prompted by his teacher's command.' ॥ 1-123-50 ॥
