एकलव्यस तु तच छरुत्वा वचॊ दरॊणस्य दारुणम परतिज्ञाम आत्मनॊ रक्षन सत्ये च निरतः सदा ॥ १-१२३-३६ ॥
'Upon hearing Drona's harsh demand, Ekalavya, true to his word and devoted to protecting his integrity, obliged.' ॥ 1-123-36 ॥

ekalavyasa tu taca charutvA vacò daròNasya dAruNama paratijJAma Atmanò rakSana satye ca nirataH sadA ॥ 1-123-36 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतथैव हृष्टवदनस तथैवादीन मानसः छित्त्वाविचार्य तं परादाद दरॊणायाङ्गुष्ठम आत्मनः ॥ १-१२३-३७ ॥
'Vaisampayana continued, 'Upon hearing Drona's harsh demand for his thumb as tuition fee, Ekalavya, steadfast in truth and committed to fulfilling his promise, without hesitation or affliction, cheerfully cut off his thumb and offered it to Drona.' ॥ 1-123-37 ॥

tathaiva hRSTavadanasa tathaivAdIna mAnasaH chittvAvicArya taM parAdAda daròNAyAGguSThama AtmanaH ॥ 1-123-37 ॥

'Afterward, when the Nishada prince resumed shooting with his remaining fingers, he realized, O king, that he had lost his previous dexterity.' ॥ 1-123-38 ॥

tataH paraM tu naiSAdira aGgulIbhira vayakarSata na tathA sa tu zIghrò 'bhUda yathApUrvaM narAdhipa ॥ 1-123-38 ॥

'Then Arjuna, feeling remorseful and free from jealousy fever, and Drona, who always spoke the truth, were the only two who didn't feel fear for Arjuna.' ॥ 1-123-39 ॥

tatò 'rajunaH parItamanA babhUva vigatajvaraH daròNaza ca satyavAga AsIna nAnyò 'bhayabhavada arjunama ॥ 1-123-39 ॥

'At that time, Drona's disciples, especially Duryodhana and Bhima, were worthy of the mace-fight, and they approached him.' ॥ 1-123-40 ॥
