भरद्वाजॊ ऽपि भगवान आरुरॊह दिवं तदा ततः पितृनियुक्तात्मा पुत्र लॊभान महायशाः शारद्वतीं ततॊ दरॊणः कृपीं भार्याम अविन्दत ।। १-१२१-११ ।।

sanskrit

'At that time, the illustrious Bharadwaja ascended to heaven. Drona, remaining in his father's hermitage, dedicated himself to ascetic practices. Having mastered the Vedas and their ancillary texts and having cleansed his sins through penance, the renowned Drona, following his father's instructions and desiring progeny, married Kripi, the daughter of Saradwat.' ।। 1-121-11 ।।

english translation

bharadvAjò 'pi bhagavAna Aruròha divaM tadA tataH pitRniyuktAtmA putra lòbhAna mahAyazAH zAradvatIM tatò daròNaH kRpIM bhAryAma avindata || 1-121-11 ||

hk transliteration

अग्निहॊत्रे च धर्मे च दमे च सततं रता अलभद गौतमी पुत्रम अश्वत्थामानम एव च ।। १-१२१-१२ ।।

sanskrit

'This woman, dedicated to virtuous deeds, the Agnihotra, and the most rigorous penances, finally bore a son named Aswatthaman.' ।। 1-121-12 ।।

english translation

agnihòtre ca dharme ca dame ca satataM ratA alabhada gautamI putrama azvatthAmAnama eva ca || 1-121-12 ||

hk transliteration

स जातमात्रॊ वयनदद यथैवॊच्चैः शरवा हयः तच छरुत्वान्तर्हितं भूतम अन्तरिक्षस्थम अब्रवीत ।। १-१२१-१३ ।।

sanskrit

'At the very moment Aswatthaman was born, he let out a neigh resembling that of the celestial steed Ucchaihsravas. Hearing this sound, an unseen entity in the sky spoke:' ।। 1-121-13 ।।

english translation

sa jAtamAtrò vayanadada yathaivòccaiH zaravA hayaH taca charutvAntarhitaM bhUtama antarikSasthama abravIta || 1-121-13 ||

hk transliteration

अश्वस्येवास्य यत सथाम नदतः परदिशॊ गतम अश्वत्थामैव बालॊ ऽयं तस्मान नाम्ना भविष्यति ।। १-१२१-१४ ।।

sanskrit

'The sound of this child has echoed like the neighing of a horse, heard all around. Therefore, he shall be named Aswatthaman, the one with the voice of a horse.' ।। 1-121-14 ।।

english translation

azvasyevAsya yata sathAma nadataH paradizò gatama azvatthAmaiva bAlò 'yaM tasmAna nAmnA bhaviSyati || 1-121-14 ||

सुतेन तेन सुप्रीतॊ भारद्वाजस ततॊ ऽभवत तत्रैव च वसन धीमान धनुर्वेद परॊ ऽभवत ।। १-१२१-१५ ।।

sanskrit

'Drona, the son of Bharadwaja, was immensely pleased with his newborn child. He continued to dwell in that hermitage, dedicating himself to the study of the science of warfare.' ।। 1-121-15 ।।

sutena tena suprItò bhAradvAjasa tatò 'bhavata tatraiva ca vasana dhImAna dhanurveda parò 'bhavata || 1-121-15 ||
