[वै] विशेषार्थी ततॊ भीष्मः पौत्राणां विनयेप्सया इष्वस्त्रज्ञान पर्यपृच्छद आचार्यान वीर्यसंमतान ।। १-१२१-१ ।।

sanskrit

'Vaisampayana replied, "With the intention of providing his grandsons with the best education, Bhishma searched for a teacher who possessed great energy and expertise in the science of warfare."' ।। 1-121-1 ।।

english translation

[vai] vizeSArthI tatò bhISmaH pautrANAM vinayepsayA iSvastrajJAna paryapRcchada AcAryAna vIryasaMmatAna || 1-121-1 ||

नाल्पधीर नामहा भागस तथानानास्त्र कॊविदः नादेव सत्त्वॊ विनयेत कुरून अस्त्रे महाबलान ।। १-१२१-२ ।।

sanskrit

'Deciding, O chief of the Bharatas, that none but those possessed of great intelligence, illustrious mastery in the science of arms, and godlike might should be the instructors of the Kuru princes.' ।। 1-121-2 ।।

english translation

nAlpadhIra nAmahA bhAgasa tathAnAnAstra kòvidaH nAdeva sattvò vinayeta kurUna astre mahAbalAna || 1-121-2 ||

महर्षिस तु भरद्वाजॊ हविर्धाने चरन पुरा ददर्शाप्सरसं साक्षाद घृताचीम आप्लुताम ऋषिः ।। १-१२१-३ ।।

sanskrit

'The son of Ganga, O tiger among men, placed the Pandavas and the Kauravas under the tuition of Bharadwaja's son, the intelligent Drona skilled in all the Vedas, after the great sage Bharadwaja, while wandering near a place of oblation, directly encountered an Apsara who had bathed in clarified butter.' ।। 1-121-3 ।।

maharSisa tu bharadvAjò havirdhAne carana purA dadarzApsarasaM sAkSAda ghRtAcIma AplutAma RSiH || 1-121-3 ||

तस्या वायुः समुद्धूतॊ वसनं वयपकर्षत ततॊ ऽसय रेतश चस्कन्द तद ऋषिर दरॊण आदधे ।। १-१२१-४ ।।

sanskrit

'As she emerged from the water, the wind lifted her garment and she dropped her vital fluid, which fell upon the ground. Seeing this, the sage Drona collected it.' ।। 1-121-4 ।।

english translation

tasyA vAyuH samuddhUtò vasanaM vayapakarSata tatò 'saya retaza caskanda tada RSira daròNa Adadhe || 1-121-4 ||

hk transliteration

तस्मिन समभवद दरॊणः कलशे तस्य धीमतः अध्यगीष्ट स वेदांश च वेदाङ्गानि च सर्वशः ।। १-१२१-५ ।।

sanskrit

'From that incident, Drona was born in a pot, endowed with intelligence. He mastered the Vedas and the Vedangas completely.' ।। 1-121-5 ।।

tasmina samabhavada daròNaH kalaze tasya dhImataH adhyagISTa sa vedAMza ca vedAGgAni ca sarvazaH || 1-121-5 ||
