[ज] किं कृतं कर्म धर्मेण येने शापम उपेयिवान कस्य शापाच च बरह्मर्षे शूद्रयॊनाव अजायत ।। १-१०१-१ ।।

sanskrit

'Janamejaya said, 'What did the god of justice do for which he was cursed? And who was the Brahmana ascetic from whose curse the god had to be born in the Sudra caste?' ।। 1-101-1 ।।

english translation

[ja] kiM kRtaM karma dharmeNa yene zApama upeyivAna kasya zApAca ca barahmarSe zUdrayònAva ajAyata || 1-101-1 ||

hk transliteration

[व] बभूव बराह्मणः कश चिन माण्डव्य इति विश्रुतः धृतिमान सर्वधर्मज्ञः सत्ये तपसि च सथितः ।। १-१०१-२ ।।

sanskrit

'Vaisampayana said, 'The name of Mandavya knew a Brahmana. He was conversant with all duties and was devoted to religion, truth, and asceticism.' ।। 1-101-2 ।।

english translation

[va] babhUva barAhmaNaH kaza cina mANDavya iti vizrutaH dhRtimAna sarvadharmajJaH satye tapasi ca sathitaH || 1-101-2 ||

hk transliteration

स आश्रमपदद्वारि वृक्षमूले महातपाः ऊर्ध्वबाहुर महायॊगी तस्थौ मौन वरतान्वितः ।। १-१०१-३ ।।

sanskrit

'The great ascetic would position himself at his hermitage's entrance, seated at the base of a tree, his arms uplifted, steadfastly observing a vow of silence.' ।। 1-101-3 ।।

english translation

sa AzramapadadvAri vRkSamUle mahAtapAH UrdhvabAhura mahAyògI tasthau mauna varatAnvitaH || 1-101-3 ||

hk transliteration

तस्य कालेन महता तस्मिंस तपसि तिष्ठतः तम आश्रमपदं पराप्ता दस्यवॊ लॊप्त्र हारिणः अनुसार्यमाणा बहुभी रक्षिभिर भरतर्षभ ।। १-१०१-४ ।।

sanskrit

'For years, he remained in meditation at that spot, until one day, his sanctuary was invaded by robbers carrying their loot. These thieves, O eminent descendant of the Bharata dynasty, were at that moment being chased by a formidable force acting as protectors of the peace.' ।। 1-101-4 ।।

english translation

tasya kAlena mahatA tasmiMsa tapasi tiSThataH tama AzramapadaM parAptA dasyavò lòptra hAriNaH anusAryamANA bahubhI rakSibhira bharatarSabha || 1-101-4 ||

hk transliteration

ते तस्यावसथे लॊप्त्रं निदधुः कुरुसत्तम निधाय च भयाल लीनास तत्रैवान्वागते बले ।। १-१०१-५ ।।

sanskrit

'Upon entering the hermitage, the thieves quickly hid their plunder and, consumed by fear, concealed themselves in its vicinity just before the arrival of the pursuing guards.' ।। 1-101-5 ।।

english translation

te tasyAvasathe lòptraM nidadhuH kurusattama nidhAya ca bhayAla lInAsa tatraivAnvAgate bale || 1-101-5 ||
