युधिष्ठिरॊ धर्ममयॊ महाद्रुमः; सकन्धॊ ऽरजुनॊ भीमसेनॊ ऽसय शाखाः माद्री सुतौ पुष्पफले समृद्धे; मूलं कृष्णॊ बरह्म च बराह्मणाश च ॥ १-१-६६॥
'Yudhishthira is a vast tree, formed of religion and virtue; Arjuna is its trunk; Bhimasena, its branches; the two sons of Madri are its full-grown fruit and flowers; and its roots are Krishna, Brahma, and the Brahmanas.' ॥ 1-1-66 ॥

yudhiSThirò dharmamayò mahAdrumaH; sakandhò 'rajunò bhImasenò 'saya zAkhAH mAdrI sutau puSpaphale samRddhe; mUlaM kRSNò barahma ca barAhmaNAza ca ॥ 1-1-66॥

'Pandu, after having subdued many countries by his wisdom and prowess, took up his abode with the Munis in a certain forest, engaging in the pursuit of hunting along with his noble companions.' ॥ 1-1-67 ॥

pANDura jitvA bahUna dezAna yudhA vikramaNena ca araNye mRgayA zIlò nayavasata sajanasa tadA ॥ 1-1-67॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptमृगव्यवाय निधने कृच्छ्रां पराप स आपदम जन्मप्रभृति पार्थानां तत्राचार विधिक्रमः ॥ १-१-६८॥
'During a hunting expedition, he brought upon himself a very severe misfortune for having killed a stag coupling with its mate, from that incident onwards, various events unfolded in the lives of the sons of Pritha (Pandu), marked by twists of fate and the unfolding of destiny.' ॥ 1-1-68 ॥

mRgavyavAya nidhane kRcchrAM parApa sa Apadama janmaprabhRti pArthAnAM tatrAcAra vidhikramaH ॥ 1-1-68॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptमात्रॊर अभ्युपपत्तिश च धर्मॊपनिषदं परति धर्मस्य वायॊः शक्रस्य देवयॊश च तथाश्विनॊः ॥ १-१-६९॥
'Their mothers, in order that the ordinances of the law might be fulfilled, admitted as substitutes to their embrace the gods Dharma, Vayu, Sakra, and the divinities the twin Aswins.' ॥ 1-1-69 ॥

mAtròra abhyupapattiza ca dharmòpaniSadaM parati dharmasya vAyòH zakrasya devayòza ca tathAzvinòH ॥ 1-1-69॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतापसैः सह संवृद्धा मातृभ्यां परिरक्षिताः मेध्यारण्येषु पुण्येषु महताम आश्रमेषु च ॥ १-१-७०॥
'Their offspring grew up, under the care of their two mothers, in the society of ascetics, in the midst of sacred groves and holy recluse-abodes of religious men.' ॥ 1-1-70 ॥
