भूतस्थानानि सर्वाणि रहस्यं विविधं च यत वेद यॊगं सविज्ञानं धर्मॊ ऽरथः काम एव च ॥ १-१-४६॥
'Countless were the generations that unfolded, and teeming were the creatures with their myriad dwellings. The enigmatic trinity—comprising the Vedas, Yoga, and Vijnana, intricately interwoven with Dharma, Artha, and Kama—revealed its multifaceted mystery.' ॥ 1-1-46 ॥

bhUtasthAnAni sarvANi rahasyaM vividhaM ca yata veda yògaM savijJAnaM dharmò 'rathaH kAma eva ca ॥ 1-1-46॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptधर्मकामार्थ शास्त्राणि शास्त्राणि विविधानि च लॊकयात्रा विधानं च संभूतं दृष्टवान ऋषिः ॥ १-१-४७॥
'The wise sage Vyasa looked through many books about living right, managing wealth, and understanding desires. These books also had rules for people's behavior, stories about the past, and talks filled with wisdom. All these diverse writings, seen and organized by Vyasa, are mentioned here as a sample of what his collection holds.' ॥ 1-1-47 ॥

'Sage Vyasa disseminated this extensive body of knowledge in both elaborate and condensed versions. The erudite community aspires to acquire both the detailed exposition and the concise summary' ॥ 1-1-49 ॥

' Some read the Bharata beginning with the initial mantra (invocation), others with the story of Astika, others with Uparichara, while some Brahmanas study the whole.' ॥ 1-1-50 ॥
