संजयैवं गते पराणांस तयक्तुम इच्छामि माचिरम सतॊकं हय अपि न पश्यामि फलं जीवितधारणे ॥ १-१-१६१ ॥
"After what hath come to pass, O Sanjaya, I wish to put an end to my life without delay; I do not find the least advantage in cherishing it any longer."॥ 1-1-161 ॥
english translation
तं तथा वादिनं दीनं विलपन्तं महीपतिम गावल्गणिर इदं धीमान महार्थं वाक्यम अब्रवीत ॥ १-१-१६२ ॥
'The wise son of Gavalgana (Sanjaya) then addressed the distressed lord of Earth while thus talking and bewailing, sighing like a serpent and repeatedly tainting, in words of deep import.' ॥ 1-1-162 ॥

शरुतवान असि वै राज्ञॊ महॊत्साहान महाबलान दवैपायनस्य वदतॊ नारदस्य च धीमतः ॥ १-१-१६३ ॥
'Thou hast heard, O Raja, of the greatly powerful men of vast exertions, spoken of by Vyasa and the wise Narada;'॥ 1-1-163 ॥

महत्सु राजवंशेषु गुणैः समुदितेषु च जातान दिव्यास्त्रविदुषः शक्र परतिमतेजसः ॥ १-१-१६४ ॥
' Men born of great royal families, resplendent with worthy qualities, versed in the science of celestial arms, and glory emblems of Indra; '॥ 1-1-164 ॥

धर्मेण पृथिवीं जित्वा यज्ञैर इष्ट्वाप्त दक्षिणैः अस्मिँल लॊके यशः पराप्य ततः कालवशं गताः ॥ १-१-१६५ ॥
'Having conquered the earth through righteousness and performing pleasing sacrifices with abundant offerings, attaining fame in this world and even surpassing that, they eventually succumbed to the control of time '॥ 1-1-165 ॥
