यदाश्रौषं भीष्मम अत्यन्तशूरं; हतं पार्थेनाहवेष्व अप्रधृष्यम शिखण्डिनं पुरतः सथापयित्वा; तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय ॥ १-१-१२६ ॥
'When I heard that Arjuna, having placed Sikhandin before himself in his chariot, had wounded Bhishma of infinite courage and invincible in battle, then, O Sanjaya, I had no hope of success.' ॥ 1-1-126 ॥

yadAzrauSaM bhISmama atyantazUraM; hataM pArthenAhaveSva apradhRSyama zikhaNDinaM purataH sathApayitvA; tadA nAzaMse vijayAya saMjaya ॥ 1-1-126 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptयदाश्रौषं शरतल्पे शयानं; वृद्धं वीरं सादितं चित्रपुङ्खैः भीष्मं कृत्वा सॊमकान अल्पशेषांस; तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय ॥ १-१-१२७ ॥
'When I learned that the venerable hero Bhishma, having significantly diminished the Shomaka clan, lay on a bed of arrows, bearing the weight of numerous wounds, I perceived it as a sign of victory, O Sanjaya, I had no hope of success.' ॥ 1-1-127 ॥

yadAzrauSaM zaratalpe zayAnaM; vRddhaM vIraM sAditaM citrapuGkhaiH bhISmaM kRtvA sòmakAna alpazeSAMsa; tadA nAzaMse vijayAya saMjaya ॥ 1-1-127 ॥

'When I heard that upon Bhishma's lying on the ground with a thirst for water, Arjuna, being requested, had pierced the ground and allayed his thirst, then, O Sanjaya, I had no hope of success.' ॥ 1-1-128 ॥

'When Venus together with Indra and Suryya united as allies for the success of the sons of Kunti, and the beasts of prey (by their inauspicious presence) were putting us in fear, then, O Sanjaya, I had no hope of success. ' ॥ 1-1-129 ॥

yadAzrauSaM zukrasUryau ca yuktau; kaunteyAnAma anulòmau jayAya nityaM cAsmAJa zavApadA vayAbhaSantasa; tadA nAzaMse vijayAya saMjaya ॥ 1-1-129 ॥

'When the wonderful warrior Drona, displaying various modes of fight in the field, did not slay any of the superior Pandavas, then, O Sanjaya, I had no hope of success ' ॥ 1-1-130 ॥
