यदाश्रौषं भीष्मम अत्यन्तशूरं; हतं पार्थेनाहवेष्व अप्रधृष्यम शिखण्डिनं पुरतः सथापयित्वा; तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय ।। १-१-१२६ ।।

sanskrit

'When I heard that Arjuna, having placed Sikhandin before himself in his chariot, had wounded Bhishma of infinite courage and invincible in battle, then, O Sanjaya, I had no hope of success.' ।। 1-1-126 ।।

english translation

yadAzrauSaM bhISmama atyantazUraM; hataM pArthenAhaveSva apradhRSyama zikhaNDinaM purataH sathApayitvA; tadA nAzaMse vijayAya saMjaya || 1-1-126 ||

'When I learned that the venerable hero Bhishma, having significantly diminished the Shomaka clan, lay on a bed of arrows, bearing the weight of numerous wounds, I perceived it as a sign of victory, O Sanjaya, I had no hope of success.' ।। 1-1-127 ।।
