यदाश्रौषं मन्त्रिणं वासुदेवं; तथा भीष्मं शांतनवं च तेषाम भारद्वाजं चाशिषॊ ऽनुब्रुवाणं; तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय ॥ १-१-१२१ ॥
'When I heard that Vasudeva and Bhishma the son of Santanu were the counsellors of the Pandavas and Drona the son of Bharadwaja pronounced blessings on them, then, O Sanjaya, I had no hope of success ' ॥ 1-1-121 ॥

दाश्रौषं कर्ण उवाच भीष्मं; नाहं यॊत्स्ये युध्यमाने तवयीति हित्वा सेनाम अपचक्राम चैव; तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय ॥ १-१-१२२ ॥
'When Karna conveyed to Bhishma, 'I shall not engage in this battle under your command. Leaving the army, I departed.' O Sanjaya, I had no hope of success ' ॥ 1-1-122 ॥

यदाश्रौषं वासुदेवार्जुनौ तौ; तथा धनुर गाण्डिवम अप्रमेयम तरीण्य उग्रवीर्याणि समागतानि; तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय ॥ १-१-१२३ ॥
'When I heard that Vasudeva and Arjuna and the bow Gandiva of immeasurable prowess, these three of dreadful energy had come together, then, O Sanjaya, I had no hope of success.' ॥ 1-1-123 ॥

यदाश्रौषं कश्मलेनाभिपन्ने; रथॊपस्थे सीदमाने ऽरजुने वै कृष्णं लॊकान दर्शयानं शरीरे; तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय ॥ १-१-१२४ ॥
'When I learned that Arjuna, overcome with remorse on his chariot and on the verge of despair, Krishna revealed to him the entirety of the cosmos within his divine form, I considered it a sign of victory O Sanjaya, I had no hope of success.' ॥ 1-1-124 ॥

यदाश्रौषं भीष्मम अमित्रकर्शनं; निघ्नन्तम आजाव अयुतं रथानाम नैषां कश चिद वध्यते दृश्यरूपस; तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय ॥ १-१-१२५ ॥
'When I heard that Bhishma, the desolator of foes, killing ten thousand charioteers every day in the field of battle, had not slain any amongst the Pandavas then, O Sanjaya, I had no hope of success.' ॥ 1-1-125 ॥
