यदाश्रौषं वैश्रवणेन सार्धं; समागतं भीमम अन्यांश च पार्थान तस्मिन देशे मानुषाणाम अगम्ये; तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय ॥ १-१-१११ ॥
'When I heard that Bhima and the other sons of Pritha (Kunti) accompanied by Vaisravana had arrived at that country which is inaccessible to man then, O Sanjaya, I had no hope of success' ॥ 1-1-111 ॥

यदाश्रौषं घॊषयात्रा गतानां; बन्धं गन्धर्वैर मॊक्षणं चार्जुनेन सवेषां सुतानां कर्ण बुद्धौ रतानां; तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय ॥ १-१-११२ ॥
'When I heard that my sons, guided by the counsels of Karna, while on their journey of Ghoshayatra, had been taken prisoners by the Gandharvas and were set free by Arjuna, then, OSanjaya, I had no hope of success' ॥ 1-1-112 ॥

यदाश्रौषं यक्षरूपेण धर्मं; समागतं धर्मराजेन सूत परश्नान उक्तान विब्रुवन्तं च सम्यक; तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय ॥ १-१-११३ ॥
'When I heard that Dharma (the god of justice) having come under the form of a Yaksha had proposed certain questions to Yudhishthira then, O Sanjaya, I had no hope of success' ॥ 1-1-113 ॥

यदाश्रौषं मामकानां वरिष्ठान; धनंजयेनैक रथेन भग्नान विराट राष्ट्रे वसता महात्मना; तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय ॥ १-१-११४ ॥
'When I heard that the principal men of my side had all been vanquished by the noble Arjuna with a single chariot while residing in the dominions of Virata, then, O Sanjaya, I had no hope of success.' ॥ 1-1-114 ॥

यदाश्रौषं सत्कृतां मत्स्यराज्ञा; सुतां दत्ताम उत्तराम अर्जुनाय तां चार्जुनः परत्यगृह्णात सुतार्थे; तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय ॥ १-१-११५ ॥
'When I heard that the king of Matsya, had offered his virtuous daughter Uttara to Arjuna and that Arjuna had accepted her for his son, then, O Sanjaya, I had no hope of success. ' ॥ 1-1-115 ॥
