तौ वृषाव इव नर्दन्तौ बलिनौ वाशितान्तरे अन्यॊन्यम अभिवर्तेतां बलविक्रम शालिनौ ॥ १-९६-३१ ॥

'Like two mighty bulls roaring amid a herd, powerful and valiant, they advanced towards each other, demonstrating their strength and prowess.' ॥ 1-96-31 ॥

ततॊ भीष्मं शांतनवं शरैः शतसहस्रशः शाल्वराजॊ नरश्रेष्ठः समवाकिरद आशुगैः ॥ १-९६-३२ ॥

'Then, the foremost of men, King Salya, swiftly showered hundreds and thousands of swift-winged shafts upon Bhishma, the son of Santanu.' ॥ 1-96-32 ॥

पूर्वम अभ्यर्दितं दृष्ट्वा भीष्मं शाल्वेन ते नृपाः विस्मिताः समपद्यन्त साधु साध्व इति चाभ्रुवन ॥ १-९६-३३ ॥

'Upon seeing Bhishma overwhelmed by the previous attack of Salya, the kings were astonished and exclaimed, "Well done! Well done!"' ॥ 1-96-33 ॥

pUrvama abhyarditaM dRSTvA bhISmaM zAlvena te nRpAH vismitAH samapadyanta sAdhu sAdhva iti cAbhruvana ॥ 1-96-33 ॥

'Beholding his lightness of hand in combat, the crowd of regal spectators became very glad and applauded Salya greatly.' ॥ 1-96-34 ॥

'That subjugator of hostile towns, Bhishma, then, on hearing those shouts of the Kshatriyas, became very angry and said, 'Stay, Stay' ॥ 1-96-35 ॥
