परतीपः खलु शैब्याम उपयेमे सुनन्द्दां नाम तस्यां पुत्रान उत्पादयाम आस देवापिं शंतनुं बाह्लीकं चेति ॥ १-९०-४६ ॥
'And Pratipa married Sunanda, the daughter of Sivi, and begat upon her three sons, viz., Devapi, Santanu and Valhika.' ॥ 1-90-46 ॥
english translation
paratIpaH khalu zaibyAma upayeme sunanddAM nAma tasyAM putrAna utpAdayAma Asa devApiM zaMtanuM bAhlIkaM ceti ॥ 1-90-46 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptदेवापिः खलु बाल एवारण्यं परविवेश शंतनुस तु महीपालॊ ऽभवत अत्रानुवंशॊ भवति ॥ १-९०-४७ ॥
'And Devapi, while still a boy, entered the woods as a hermit. And Santanu became king. Here occurs a sloka in respect of Santanu.' ॥ 1-90-47 ॥
english translation
devApiH khalu bAla evAraNyaM paraviveza zaMtanusa tu mahIpAlò 'bhavata atrAnuvaMzò bhavati ॥ 1-90-47 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptयं यं कराभ्यां सपृशति जीर्णं स सुखम अश्नुते पुनर युवा च भवति तस्मात तं शंतनुं विदुः ॥ १-९०-४८ ॥
'Those old men that were touched by this monarch not only felt an indescribable sensation of pleasure but also became restored to youth.' ॥ 1-90-48 ॥
english translation
yaM yaM karAbhyAM sapRzati jIrNaM sa sukhama aznute punara yuvA ca bhavati tasmAta taM zaMtanuM viduH ॥ 1-90-48 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतद अस्य शंतनुत्वम ॥ १-९०-४९ ॥
'Therefore, this monarch was called Santanu.' ॥ 1-90-49 ॥
english translation
tada asya zaMtanutvama ॥ 1-90-49 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptशंतनुः खलु गनां भागीरथीम उपयेमे तस्याम अस्य जज्ञे देवव्रतः यम आहुर भीष्म इति ॥ १-९०-५० ॥
'And Santanu married Ganga, who bore him a son Devavrata who was afterward called Bhishma.' ॥ 1-90-50 ॥

zaMtanuH khalu ganAM bhAgIrathIma upayeme tasyAma asya jajJe devavrataH yama Ahura bhISma iti ॥ 1-90-50 ॥
