अहं हि पूर्वॊ वयसा भवद्भ्यस; तेनाभिवादं भवतां न परयुञ्जे यॊ विद्यया तपसा जन्मना वा; वृद्धः स पूज्यॊ भवति दविजानाम ॥ १-८४-२ ॥

sanskrit

'I am senior to you in age, which is why I did not offer the first salutation. Truly, among the learned, it is he who surpasses in years, wisdom, or ascetic accomplishments that commands respect.' ॥ 1-84-2 ॥

english translation

ahaM hi pUrvò vayasA bhavadbhyasa; tenAbhivAdaM bhavatAM na parayuJje yò vidyayA tapasA janmanA vA; vRddhaH sa pUjyò bhavati davijAnAma ॥ 1-84-2 ॥
