अन्तेषु स विनिक्षिप्य पुत्रान यदुपुरॊगमान फलमूलाशनॊ राजा वने संन्यवसच चिरम ॥ १-८१-११ ॥
'Having dispatched his sons, led by Yadu, to the frontiers, the king, subsisting on fruits and roots, long resided in the forest.' ॥ 1-81-11 ॥
english translation
संशितात्मा जितक्रॊधस तर्पयन पितृदेवताः अग्नींश च विधिवज जुह्वन वानप्रस्थविधानतः ॥ १-८१-१२ ॥
'With his mind and senses fully mastered, the king satisfied the ancestors and gods through sacrificial offerings. He also made offerings of ghee (clarified butter) into the sacred fire, adhering to the rituals meant for those embracing the forest-dwelling stage of life.' ॥ 1-81-12 ॥

अतिथीन पूजयाम आस वन्येन हविषा विभुः शिलॊञ्छ वृत्तिम आस्थाय शेषान्न कृतभॊजनः ॥ १-८१-१३ ॥
'The noble king hosted guests and travelers with forest fruits and clarified butter, while he sustained himself by gathering stray grains.' ॥ 1-81-13 ॥

पूर्णं वर्षसहस्रं स एवंवृत्तिर अभून नृपः अब्भक्षः शरदस तरिंशद आसीन नियतवान मनाः ॥ १-८१-१४ ॥
'And the king; led this sort of life for a full thousand years. And observing the vow of silence and with mind under complete control he passed one full year.' ॥ 1-81-14 ॥

ततश च वायुभक्षॊ ऽभूत संवत्सरम अतन्द्रितः पञ्चाग्निमध्ये च तपस तेपे संवत्सरं नृपः ॥ १-८१-१५ ॥
'Thereafter, subsisting solely on air for a year, tirelessly, and amidst the five fires, the king performed severe penance for a year.' ॥ 1-81-15 ॥
