[ज] कर्मणा केन स दिवं पुनः पराप्तॊ महीपतिः सर्वम एतद अशेषेण शरॊतुम इच्छामि तत्त्वतः कथ्यमानं तवया विप्र विप्रर्षिगणसंनिधौ ।। १-८१-६ ।।

sanskrit

'Janamejaya said, 'I desire to hear from thee in detail why Yayati, having first obtained admission into heaven, was hurled therefrom, and why also he gained re-admittance. Let all this, O Brahmana, be narrated by thee in the presence of these regenerate sages.'' ।। 1-81-6 ।।

english translation

[ja] karmaNA kena sa divaM punaH parAptò mahIpatiH sarvama etada azeSeNa zaròtuma icchAmi tattvataH kathyamAnaM tavayA vipra viprarSigaNasaMnidhau || 1-81-6 ||

hk transliteration

देवराजसमॊ हय आसीद ययातिः पृथिवीपतिः वर्धनः कुरुवंशस्य विभावसु समद्युतिः ।। १-८१-७ ।।

sanskrit

'Yayati, lord of Earth, was, indeed, like the chief of the celestials. The progenitor of the extensive race of the Kurus, he was of the splendor of the Sun.' ।। 1-81-7 ।।

english translation

devarAjasamò haya AsIda yayAtiH pRthivIpatiH vardhanaH kuruvaMzasya vibhAvasu samadyutiH || 1-81-7 ||

hk transliteration

तस्य विस्तीर्णयशसः सत्यकीर्तेर महात्मनः चरितं शरॊतुम इच्छामि दिवि चेह च सर्वशः ।। १-८१-८ ।।

sanskrit

'I desire to hear in full the story of his life both in heaven and on Earth, as he was illustrious, and of worldwide celebrity and of wonderful achievements.' ।। 1-81-8 ।।

english translation

tasya vistIrNayazasaH satyakIrtera mahAtmanaH caritaM zaròtuma icchAmi divi ceha ca sarvazaH || 1-81-8 ||

hk transliteration

[व] हन्त ते कथयिष्यामि ययातेर उत्तरां कथाम दिवि चेह च पुण्यार्थां सर्वपापप्रणाशिनीम ।। १-८१-९ ।।

sanskrit

'Vaisampayana said, "Indeed, I will narrate to you the profound story of Yayati, encompassing his deeds on Earth and his journey in heaven. This sacred tale eradicates the sins of those who listen to it."' ।। 1-81-9 ।।

english translation

[va] hanta te kathayiSyAmi yayAtera uttarAM kathAma divi ceha ca puNyArthAM sarvapApapraNAzinIma || 1-81-9 ||

hk transliteration

ययातिर नाहुषॊ राजा पूरुं पुत्रं कनीयसम राज्ये ऽभिषिच्य मुदितः परवव्राज वनं तदा ।। १-८१-१० ।।

sanskrit

'After appointing his youngest son, Puru, as the king and exiling his elder sons, including Yadu, among the Mlecchas, Yayati, the son of Nahusha, retreated to the forest to live the life of a hermit.' ।। 1-81-10 ।।

english translation

yayAtira nAhuSò rAjA pUruM putraM kanIyasama rAjye 'bhiSicya muditaH paravavrAja vanaM tadA || 1-81-10 ||
