[य] अधर्मॊ न सपृशेद एवं महान माम इह भार्गव वर्णसंकरजॊ बरह्मन्न इति तवां परवृणॊम्य अहम ।। १-७६-३१ ।।

sanskrit

'Yayati replied, "O Bhargava, such a great sin should not touch me. I reject your proposal, for I am a Brahmana by birth, and I cannot accept it."' ।। 1-76-31 ।।

english translation

[ya] adharmò na sapRzeda evaM mahAna mAma iha bhArgava varNasaMkarajò barahmanna iti tavAM paravRNòmya ahama || 1-76-31 ||

hk transliteration

[षु] अधर्मात तवां विमुञ्चामि वरयस्व यथेप्षितम अस्मिन विवाहे मा गलासीर अहं पापं नुदामि ते ।। १-७६-३२ ।।

sanskrit

'Sukra then said, "I release you from any sin in this matter. Choose as you desire. In this marriage, let there be no impediment; I absolve you of any sin."' ।। 1-76-32 ।।

english translation

[Su] adharmAta tavAM vimuJcAmi varayasva yathepSitama asmina vivAhe mA galAsIra ahaM pApaM nudAmi te || 1-76-32 ||

hk transliteration

वहस्व भार्यां धर्मेण देव यानीं सुमध्यमाम अनया सह संप्रीतिम अतुलां समवाप्स्यसि ।। १-७६-३३ ।।

sanskrit

'Marry Devayani, the slender-waisted, and uphold her with righteousness. Together, may you experience an unmatched delight.' ।। 1-76-33 ।।

english translation

vahasva bhAryAM dharmeNa deva yAnIM sumadhyamAma anayA saha saMprItima atulAM samavApsyasi || 1-76-33 ||

hk transliteration

इयं चापि कुमारी ते शर्मिष्ठा वार्षपर्वणी संपूज्या सततं राजन मा चैनां शयने हवयेः ।। १-७६-३४ ।।

sanskrit

'This maiden, Sarmishtha, daughter of Vrishaparvan, should also be treated with respect by you. However, you must not call her to your bed.' ।। 1-76-34 ।।

english translation

iyaM cApi kumArI te zarmiSThA vArSaparvaNI saMpUjyA satataM rAjana mA cainAM zayane havayeH || 1-76-34 ||

[व] एवम उक्तॊ ययातिस तु शुक्रं कृत्वा परदक्षिणम जगाम सवपुरं हृष्टॊ अनुज्ञातॊ महात्मना ।। १-७६-३५ ।।

sanskrit

'Vaisampayana narrated, "Upon being advised by Sukra, King Yayati respectfully ceremonially circled around the Brahmana. Subsequently, he joyously proceeded with the sacred matrimonial rites as prescribed by the holy scriptures. Gifted by Sukra with the splendid Devayani, along with Sarmishtha and the two thousand attendants, and receiving due honors from both Sukra and the Asuras, the distinguished monarch, under the esteemed directive of the noble Bhargava, made his way back to his capital, his heart brimming with happiness."' ।। 1-76-35 ।।

english translation

[va] evama uktò yayAtisa tu zukraM kRtvA paradakSiNama jagAma savapuraM hRSTò anujJAtò mahAtmanA || 1-76-35 ||
