ऋतस्य दातारम अनुत्तमस्य; निधिं निधीनां चतुरन्वयानाम ये नाद्रियन्ते गुरुम अर्चनीयं; पालाँल लॊकांस ते वरजन्त्य अप्रतिष्ठान ।। १-७१-५१ ।।

sanskrit

'I consider one who imparts the nectar of knowledge into the ignorant, as you have done for me, to be both my father and mother.' ।। 1-71-51 ।।

english translation

Rtasya dAtArama anuttamasya; nidhiM nidhInAM caturanvayAnAma ye nAdriyante guruma arcanIyaM; pAlA~la lòkAMsa te varajantya apratiSThAna || 1-71-51 ||

hk transliteration

[व] सुरा पानाद वञ्चनां परापयित्वा; संज्ञा नाशं चैव तथातिघॊरम दृष्ट्वा कचं चापि तथाभिरूपं; पीतं तदा सुरया मॊहितेन ।। १-७१-५२ ।।

sanskrit

'Vaisampayana continued, 'The learned Sukra, having been deceived while under the influence of wine, and remembering the total loss of consciousness that is one of the terrible consequences of drink, and beholding too before him the handsome Kacha whom he had, in a state of unconsciousness, drunk with his wine, then thought of effecting a reform in the manners of Brahmanas.' ।। 1-71-52 ।।

english translation

[va] surA pAnAda vaJcanAM parApayitvA; saMjJA nAzaM caiva tathAtighòrama dRSTvA kacaM cApi tathAbhirUpaM; pItaM tadA surayA mòhitena || 1-71-52 ||

hk transliteration

समन्युर उत्थाय महानुभावस; तदॊशना विप्रहितं चिकीर्षुः काव्यः सवयं वाक्यम इदं जगाद; सुरा पानं परति वै जातशङ्कः ।। १-७१-५३ ।।

sanskrit

'The high-souled Usanas rising from the ground in anger, then spoke as follows: "The wretched Brahmana who from this day, unable to resist the temptation, will drink wine shall be regarded as having lost his virtue.' ।। 1-71-53 ।।

english translation

samanyura utthAya mahAnubhAvasa; tadòzanA viprahitaM cikIrSuH kAvyaH savayaM vAkyama idaM jagAda; surA pAnaM parati vai jAtazaGkaH || 1-71-53 ||

hk transliteration

यॊ बराह्मणॊ ऽदय परभृतीह कश चिन; मॊहात सुरां पास्यति मन्दबुद्धिः अपेतधर्मॊ बरह्महा चैव स सयाद; अस्मिँल लॊके गर्हितः सयात परे च ।। १-७१-५४ ।।

sanskrit

'From today onwards, any Brahmana who, out of delusion and with a clouded mind, drinks alcohol, shall be considered devoid of righteousness and akin to a slayer of a Brahmana. He shall be condemned in this world and the next.' ।। 1-71-54 ।।

english translation

yò barAhmaNò 'daya parabhRtIha kaza cina; mòhAta surAM pAsyati mandabuddhiH apetadharmò barahmahA caiva sa sayAda; asmi~la lòke garhitaH sayAta pare ca || 1-71-54 ||

hk transliteration

मया चेमां विप्र धर्मॊक्ति सीमां; मर्यादां वै सथापितां सर्वलॊके सन्तॊ विप्राः शुश्रुवांसॊ गुरूणां; देवा लॊकाश चॊपशृण्वन्तु सर्वे ।। १-७१-५५ ।।

sanskrit

'I have thus established this boundary of conduct as prescribed by the scriptures for all the worlds. Let the virtuous Brahmanas, who are obedient to their mentors, and all the gods and worlds, hear and adhere to this decree.' ।। 1-71-55 ।।

english translation

mayA cemAM vipra dharmòkti sImAM; maryAdAM vai sathApitAM sarvalòke santò viprAH zuzruvAMsò gurUNAM; devA lòkAza còpazRNvantu sarve || 1-71-55 ||
