जाया जनयते पुत्रम आत्मनॊ ऽङगं दविधाकृतम तस्माद भरस्व दुःषन्त पुत्रं शाकुन्तलं नृप ॥ १-६९-३१ ॥

'The husband, dividing his body in two, is born as his son from his wife. Therefore, O Dushmanta, as a monarch, cherish your son born of Shakuntala.' ॥ 1-69-31 ॥

english translation

अभूतिर एषा कस तयज्याज जीवञ जीवन्तम आत्मजम शाकुन्तलं महात्मानं दौःषन्तिं भर पौरव ॥ १-६९-३२ ॥

'Forsaking a living son is to embrace misfortune itself. Therefore, O scion of Puru, cherish your noble son born of Shakuntala.' ॥ 1-69-32 ॥

english translation

भर्तव्यॊ ऽयं तवया यस्माद अस्माकं वचनाद अपि तस्माद भवत्व अयं नाम्ना भरतॊ नाम ते सुतः ॥ १-६९-३३ ॥

'Since this child must be cherished by you, upon our directive, your son shall henceforth be named Bharata, meaning 'the cherished one.' ॥ 1-69-33 ॥

english translation

तच छरुत्वा पौरवॊ राजा वयाहृतं वै दिवौकसाम पुरॊहितम अमात्यांश च संप्रहृष्टॊ ऽबरवीद इदम ॥ १-६९-३४ ॥

'Hearing these words uttered by the dwellers in heaven, the monarch of Puru's race became overjoyed and spoke as follows unto his priests and ministers.' ॥ 1-69-34 ॥

english translation

शृण्वन्त्व एतद भवन्तॊ ऽसय देवदूतस्य भाषितम अहम अप्य एवम एवैनं जानामि सवयम आत्मजम ॥ १-६९-३५ ॥

'Hear these words spoken by the celestial messenger? I know this one to be my son myself.' ॥ 1-69-35 ॥
