महादेवान्तकाभ्यां च कामात करॊधाच च भारत एकत्वम उपपन्नानां जज्ञे शूरः परंतपः ॥ १-६१-६६ ॥
'O Bharata, through the blessings of Mahadeva and the satisfaction of his desires, he achieved unity with the divine, displaying great valor and prowess.' ॥ 1-61-66 ॥
english translation
अश्वत्थामा महावीर्यः शत्रुपक्ष कषयं करः वीरः कमलपत्राक्षः कषिताव आसीन नराधिप ॥ १-६१-६७ ॥
'And, O king, his son the heroic Aswatthaman, of eyes like the lotus-petals, gifted with surpassing energy, and the terror of all foes, the great oppressor of all enemies, was born on earth, of the united portions of Mahadeva, Yama, Kama, and Krodha.' ॥ 1-61-67 ॥

जज्ञिरे वसवस तव अष्टौ गङ्गायां शंतनॊः सुताः वसिष्ठस्य च शापेन नियॊगाद वासवस्य च ॥ १-६१-६८ ॥
'And from the curse of Vasishtha and the command also of Indra, the eight Vasus were born of Ganga by her husband Santanu.' ॥ 1-61-68 ॥

तेषाम अवरजॊ भीष्मः कुरूणाम अभयंकरः मतिमान वेदविद वाग्मी शत्रुपक्ष कषयं करः ॥ १-६१-६९ ॥
'The youngest of them was Bhishma, the dispeller of the fears of the Kurus, gifted with great intelligence, conversant with the Vedas, the first speakers, and the thinner of the enemy's ranks.' ॥ 1-61-69 ॥

जामदग्न्येन रामेण यः स सर्वविदां वरः अयुध्यत महातेजा भार्गवेण महात्मना ॥ १-६१-७० ॥
'And possessed of mighty energy and the first of all persons acquainted with weapons, he encountered the illustrious Rama himself, the son of Jamadagni of the Bhrigu race.' ॥ 1-61-70 ॥
