तथा भीष्मः शांतनवॊ गङ्गायाम अमितद्युतिः वसु वीर्यात समभवन महावीर्यॊ महायशाः ॥ १-५७-७६ ॥
'Then Bhishma, of great energy and fame and immeasurable splendor, and sprung from the parts of the Vasus, was born in the womb of Ganga through king Shantanu.' ॥ 1-57-76 ॥
english translation
tathA bhISmaH zAMtanavò gaGgAyAma amitadyutiH vasu vIryAta samabhavana mahAvIryò mahAyazAH ॥ 1-57-76 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptशूले परॊतः पुराणर्षिर अचॊरश चॊरशङ्कया अणी माण्डव्य इति वै विख्यातः सुमहायशाः ॥ १-५७-७७ ॥
'And there was a Rishi named Animandavya of great fame. And he was conversant with the interpretations of the Vedas, was illustrious, gifted with great energy, and of great reputation. And, accused of theft, though innocent, the old Rishi was impaled.' ॥ 1-57-77 ॥
english translation
zUle paròtaH purANarSira acòraza còrazaGkayA aNI mANDavya iti vai vikhyAtaH sumahAyazAH ॥ 1-57-77 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptस धर्मम आहूय पुरा महर्षिर इदम उक्तवान इषीकया मया बाल्याद एका विद्धा शकुन्तिका ॥ १-५७-७८ ॥
'He thereupon summoned Dharma and told him these words, 'In my childhood, I had pierced a little fly on a blade of grass, O Dharma!' ॥ 1-57-78 ॥
english translation
sa dharmama AhUya purA maharSira idama uktavAna iSIkayA mayA bAlyAda ekA viddhA zakuntikA ॥ 1-57-78 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतत किल्बिषं समरे धर्मनान्यत पापम अहं समरे तन मे सहस्रसमितं कस्मान नेहाजयत तपः ॥ १-५७-७९ ॥
'I recollect that one sin: but I cannot call to mind any other. I have, however since practised penances a thousandfold. Hath not that one sin been conquered by this my asceticism? ' ॥ 1-57-79 ॥
english translation
tata kilbiSaM samare dharmanAnyata pApama ahaM samare tana me sahasrasamitaM kasmAna nehAjayata tapaH ॥ 1-57-79 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptगरीयान बराह्मणवधः सर्वभूतवधाद यतः तस्मात तवं किल्बिषाद अस्माच छूद्र यॊनौ जनिष्यसि ॥ १-५७-८० ॥
'O Dharma, you have incurred sin because the act of killing a Brahmana is considered more heinous than harming any other living being.' ॥ 1-57-80 ॥
english translation
garIyAna barAhmaNavadhaH sarvabhUtavadhAda yataH tasmAta tavaM kilbiSAda asmAca chUdra yònau janiSyasi ॥ 1-57-80 ॥
