'Janamejaya said, 'O excellent Brahmana, thou hast, indeed, told me, in brief, the history, called Mahabharata, of the great acts of the Kurus.' ॥ 1-56-1 ॥

'O venerable one with ascetic wisdom, kindly share the enchanting narrative in its entirety. I am greatly intrigued and eager to hear the complete story.' ॥ 1-56-2 ॥

न तत कारणम अल्पं हि धर्मज्ञा यत्र पाण्डवाः अवध्यान सर्वशॊ जघ्नुः परशस्यन्ते च मानवैः ॥ १-५६-४ ॥

'It could never have been a trivial reason for the virtuous ones to slay those they ought not to have, yet they are still praised by people.' ॥ 1-56-4 ॥

na tata kAraNama alpaM hi dharmajJA yatra pANDavAH avadhyAna sarvazò jaghnuH parazasyante ca mAnavaiH ॥ 1-56-4 ॥

किमर्थं ते नरव्याघ्राः शक्ताः सन्तॊ हय अनागसः परयुज्यमानान संक्लेशान कषान्तवन्तॊ दुरात्मनाम ॥ १-५६-५ ॥

'Why also did those tigers among men, innocent and capable of avenging themselves upon their enemies, calmly suffer the persecution of the wicked Kurus?' ॥ 1-56-5 ॥
