[स] एवम उक्त्वा ततः शरीमान मन्त्रिभिश चानुमॊदितः आरुरॊह परतिज्ञां स सर्पसत्राय पार्थिवः बरह्मन भरतशार्दूलॊ राजा पारिक्षितस तदा ॥ १-४७-१ ॥

'Sauti said, 'King Janamejaya having said so, his ministers expressed their approbation. And the monarch then expressed his determination to perform a snake-sacrifice. And that lord of the Earth--that tiger of the Bharata race--the son of Parikshit, then called his priest and Ritwiks.' ॥ 1-47-1 ॥

पुरॊहितम अथाहूय ऋत्विजं वसुधाधिपः अब्रवीद वाक्यसंपन्नः संपद अर्थकरं वचः ॥ १-४७-२ ॥

'And accomplished in speech, he spake unto them these words relating to the accomplishment of his great task.' ॥ 1-47-2 ॥

यॊ मे हिंसितवांस तातं तक्षकः स दुरात्मवान परतिकुर्यां यथा तस्य तद भवन्तॊ बरुवन्तु मे ॥ १-४७-३ ॥

'I am determined to seek retribution against the villain Takshaka, the one who caused the demise of my father. Please advise me on the course of action I should undertake.' ॥ 1-47-3 ॥

अपि तत कर्म विदितं भवतां येन पन्नगम तक्षकं संप्रदीप्ते ऽगनौ पराप्स्ये ऽहं सहबान्धवम ॥ १-४७-४ ॥

'Is there a method you can guide me on, an act that would allow me to cast Takshaka and his kin into the searing flames?Is there a method you can guide me on, an act that would allow me to cast Takshaka and his kin into the searing flames?' ॥ 1-47-4 ॥

api tata karma viditaM bhavatAM yena pannagama takSakaM saMpradIpte 'ganau parApsye 'haM sahabAndhavama ॥ 1-47-4 ॥

यथा तेन पिता मह्यं पूर्वं दग्धॊ विषाग्निना तथाहम अपि तं पापं दग्धुम इच्छामि पन्नगम ॥ १-४७-५ ॥

'In the same manner that my father was previously consumed by the fire of venom, I now desire to similarly burn that sinful serpent, Takshaka.' ॥ 1-47-5 ॥
